Roof repair courtesy Cali issue

Probably on here somewhere and I can't find for looking (sorry if so)......my 11 plate Cali is going in for roof surgery on Monday. I can't have a courtesy Cali as I have 3 points on my licence - surely this can't be right. Doubly penalised...one for error of judgement/lack of attention (44mph into 30 zone) and one for buying an expensive vehice with a dodgy roof/paint job that has to be taken away for 2 weeks therefore I'm vehicless!!
Is this correct or have others had a courtesy Cali with points?

I've waited 1 year aswell for the repair (like many others I know) whilst watching the paintwork flake away exposing the bodywork!

That doesn't sound right 3 points is so minor I though everybody had at least 3 points

There must be others on here who have have been " caught" and given points and had a loan Cali. We need "a shame on you" to rate such drivers. Can't be correct.

3 points shouldn't make at difference at all - We allow up to six points on our hires.

Why not offer to insure the Cali on your insurance? Just get your insurers to switch the cover over - We allow this with a cover note

Thankyou for the replies
I'll 'challenge' tom'w.
'Why not offer to insure the Cali on your insurance? Just get your insurers to switch the cover over - We allow this with a cover note' - I'll try this avenue with them and see what they say.
Thankyou again.

Think carefully about this. If you just transfer your cover to the loan Cali, then your existing one won't be insured unless you make arrangements accordingly. Now of course it is in the garages care, so any damage which occurs whilst such is their problem? Yes, but if something did happen which was maybe not picked up at the time, then you have the hassle of making a claim against the garage, whereas if you ensure your existing Cali remains insured, you can always claim on your own cover and leave Insurers to sort it out.
I would have thought your existing Insurers ought to be able to keep the cover on your existing Cali, but give you short term cover on the loan one, for a fee of course!
Good luck - I agree it seems ridiculous to penalise 3 points

Would they loan you an ordinary car instead or must you have a Cali?

Hiya everyone
Thanks for your replies, really helped the thinking!
Good advice Marshian70, and yes Snowy55 I requested a VW car instead today. They'll let me know tomw!!
Think I'd been misinformed as VW CS rang me and wanted to know who'd told me about the 3 points issue! They did'nt say either way, but did'nt dismiss me or reaffirm the initial information I was given.
So, after watching the Cali on the back of an AA truck disappear for 2 weeks about half hour ago I'll endeavour to get a curtesy car tom'w if I'm allowed one.
Fingers crossed.

VW have not called me back!
I've been busy at work so not thought about it!
Just a hassle!!!

Some good points imho are made in this thread.
It started me thinking about the change of custody and insurance cover not only of the loan cali but for my cali also.
What is the view regarding a damage inspection at the time of transfer, similar to the one when you hire a vehicle.

The hire companies must have spent time to establish a process that protects both parties through both signing for the condition, before the vehicle is taken off the premises as it is their bread and butter.

Proving who, when, where damage has been caused is very difficult after the fact.
It cuts both ways in my view, evidence of the condition, as accepted by both parties, I need to know the detail of the insurance to protect my cali whilst it is in the custody of the repair workshop, including travel to and from, the minute it is taken out of my sight until it returns to my drive. A similar inspection at the second point of transfer when my cali returns.
A standard template would help all cali owners at the point of handover. Images may be useful but dents scratches are not always clear.

It is too important to leave it purely to chance and dispute as issues arise
Any thoughts on this topic gratefully received.

The AA are used through their contract with VWUK to move the Cali's to and from the repair shop.

They have a well proven process and paperwork which they employ for all of their vehicle transfers, including the VWUK contract. I felt very confident about the process when our Cali went back for repair.

Sounds pretty shabby from VW.
FYI - I asked for a Golf as a courtesy car instead of a Cali. Told them I'm in the market for a small family car and thought this would be an ideal opportunity to test one out.
"Nope, sorry" was the reply from AB Crush without even asking VW on my behalf!

Thanks Alan,
I feel more at ease after your response.
Appreciated

AA sometime subcontract to other parties. Mine was left overnight at a service station for swapping between regions/carriers.

Make sure you get the paperwork at handover... My Cali suffered some damage during the process (I won't go into all the details) spotted and photographed whilst still on the delivery carrier whilst being returned. (Non-AA - A subcontract)

VW, the AA and the repair centre couldn't narrow down or agree where it had been caused and as such took a long, long time to get resolved.

Ultimately sorted, but that's another story.

Check things very carefully (take pictures before and after - I was lucky to have pictures of the area when it was loaded onto the van for taking away as part of a magazine article), I suspect I was unlucky and one of the few but things can go wrong and some of the parties don't want to accept responsibility.

Rgds

Our Cali was moved by AA themselves, not sub contracted.
However, having never broken down or needed recovering in the past, I was concerned about the process.

I did watch it being loaded and unloaded and walked round the van before each operation, but needn't have worried. A professional and caring operation by both drivers.
