Hi All,

After a very tortuous phone call with VW insurance I was informed that VW do not offer insurance on the VW California.

I was under the impression from other threads that other members on the forum were covered by VW?

Please can anyone clarify?

thanks,

Mark

Hi Snowy,

Do you know if the insurance was backed by Alliance or Ageas? (seems to have moved to Ageas).

Can you clarify what number you called?

thanks,

0844 391 4115 is the Customer service helpline I've got.
At work now, will check Ins paperwork when I get home.

Just spoken to Ageas again (VW's new insurer) who have confirmed they do not insure the California.

I have asked them to confirm in writing.

I'd hazard a guess that your current insurance is through Alliance.

I have just had the same problem. Having gone through a 40 minute phone call I was told VW (Ageas) do not insure the Cali. I've spoken to the dealership who were like me astonished that they don't they are looking into it for me. In the meantime I've had a very competitive quote from Comfort and you can access this online at their website.

Hi John,

I did the same thing and spoke to Comfort.

Based on previous threads on Comfort you may or may not be aware that there are two different policies being sold...the online one and when you contact by telephone.

The online policy is through a different company which is why there have been people on the forum mentioning that they could not get insured on just the California but needed a second vehicle.

I'd suggest talking to them...

Thanks. I have followed up with a phone call to confirm that a tracker wasn't required (it's not). The online quote is for indication purposes and asks for more info re occupations etc. to finalise the policy. Surprisingly they wanted to know about windscreen replacements in the last 5 years!

:thumb agree "reserves".

1. No 36hr rule when abroad as does Comfort.
2. GAP insurance for 2 years on New Vehicles
3. Cheaper than VW
4. Covers 270 days abroad - I think a lot of other companies have lower limits.
5. Covers ALL Western Europe and a lot of Eastern as well.
6. Can have multiple vehicles.
7. Covers ALL removable camping and personal stuff upto, I think, £5000.
8. Covers ALL manufacturers equipment + ALL accessories etc: that are on the original invoice with new vehicles. Some insurers cover the vehicle in their premium but not the extras like Kitchen/wardrobe unit, gas and water supplies, elevating roof mechanicals and electronic units etc unless specified and additional premium paid. Craftily they only mention this when specifically asked.
9. Easy to deal with.
10. May not be the cheapest around but work for you when/if you have to make a claim.
11. Repairs etc: are to VW standard so that warranty is maintained.

Very strange that VW don't even cover their own vehicles?

Mine was covered by VW last year and they offered me cover this year but I found a cheaper option.

Just to clarify VW changed provider Alliance to Ageas today. As of today VW no longer insure the Cali.
I'm not sure what will happen when those with Alliance policies come up for renewal?
I do wonder if this is merely a teething issue or if Ageas will not cover Cali's going forwards. Either way it's a pain for new customers and an embarrassment for VW surely.

I agree, very strange. Did the new company not know that VW made the California?, and that it was an all singing/dancing campervan?

I spoke to different agents in the call centre.

They had no idea what a California was (I actually spoke to a Manager in the end) and only the odd part was they couldn't tell me at the beginning of the call rather than after they captured lots of information on me.

Like John I have also mentioned it to the VW dealership who were also very surprised.

Just moved our Insurance to Caravan and Camping Club last week - when it came through its with Ageas.

I'm confused and wondering if this thread was an April Fool. My renewal quote for Cali SE came in from VW today and cover is provided by Allianz Insurance.

No April fool just confusion all round!
As a new customer VW no longer use Allianz but it seems they are honouring existing policies. As Ageas underwrite Cali's for Caravan & Camping policies but not VW it's just too confusing.

Thanks for the clarification. I wouldn't have known anything if not for this post. Renewal has come in with same VW logo forms and info as last year as if everything is the same. Except, of course, the cost!

caravan club wouldn't offer any insurance for me (after 20 minute call), as I have to park on the road. got really good deal via confused.com with admiral. most insurers are confused about the California - some class as a car, some a motorhome. I'm in Manchester and with European cover (60 days) am paying less than I did on my twenty year old car. and I shop around every year

I am insured through C&CC "clubcare" the underwriter is Ageas.

I have to say the same thing happened to us. For our brand new california the Insurance was less than £200 inc full Euro cover. Others were twice that price.

Bought our new Cali in March, got a quote from VW and it was over £600 , after several other quotes I finally settled on Caravan Club at £240 and no tracker required.
