Yes, agreed, we've flirted with the idea several times but always shy away from it for several reasons.

How seriously do we have to have considered it to be "of interest" David? Happy to help, but we may not have taken our ideas far enough for you.

Mark

Hi Mark,

Literally it can be considering or just thinking about it, we are just gauging interest on something.

OK - well, happy to be considered and help. Let me know what you need.

Cheers
Mark

As mentioned on another thread we re thinking of selling ours after this years summer holiday, as we want to do some building work and the kids are nagging for a more long haul holiday.

We have been considering hiring the van out but the following things are stopping us:
  • Insurance - it looks like you need to have full hire insurance as the day by day coverage appears to be expensive and in some instances not compatible with your personal insurance
  • Scheduling - if something goes wrong in one hire, then that will impact the next hire
  • Hassle - constant cleaning and turning around of the van
  • Car - will need another car for the times when the van is "out"
I guess you can mitigate some of the above by renting to friends and family, neighbors and work colleagues.

The advantages of course are:
  • Money - should cover costs quite easily
  • Still have a Cali for personal use, but will lose some of the spontaneity
So in balance we will probably sell and if we get the Cali itch we can hire one from one of the above :D

We will then buy again in 2-3 years and will definitely have one when the kids leave home :)

This sounds interesting, we do not use our Cali as much as we hoped for but would not want to be without it, if we can earn some money from or it or at least cover our costs this would be of interest to us as well.

Just a little bump on this thread.

Especially looking for people North of London that may be interested?

Decided against renting ours in the end

I am seriously thinking about it now. Im just a little worried about the paperwork and advertising it. ie i am hopeless with websites.
How much can be made from hiring it out say for the main 6 weeks?
Buster

We charge just under £900 per week for July and August and have been fully booked all the way through on both vans! If you do the sums on that you can see it is very worthwhile.

Hi
After a chat with Martin etc at COTF we decided to give it a go by purchasing another Cali for this purpose. We are taking delivery of a new 15 plate on Thursday and are now busy trying to get insurance etc sorted so that we may get a few hires in while decent weather is here
Regards to all
Simon

Great news Simon, feel free to give me a call any time, be good to have a catch up.

We are also hiring out ours next year, it just does not get the use it used to but we would miss it if we sold it.

From our calculations hiring it will cover all our costs and depreciation plus it will pay for any holidays we have

Pondering on this for next year, the figures are stacking up quite well

Can I join the list of people renting one out

Email sent , we have been dithering over this for a couple of years and think we will give it a bash next year.

Where are all you hirers purchasing your insurance?
Our current insurer (Admiral) are not interested.

We are currently trying to sort out a deal for unlimited self drive insurance with a broker that will be underwritten by LV, we are hoping to get some kind of discount in place for people that list their hire vehicle through us.

I should have some more information on this next week.

Quite a few people are still considering hiring out their vans for next year and we are starting to build a good network around the UK.

If anyone is still thinking of hiring out their van please email us at hire@vwcaliforniaclub.com and we will happily give you a call and have a chat.

Thanks Martin that will be useful.
All the ones I have tried have said no, including Comfort.
