Just thought I would post a thread about recent experience with towing a boat with a Cali in case it is of interest to current/future owners etc....

Anyway we have been towing racing/sailing dinghies for many years, our recent towing weapon of choice normally being our trusty old Passat (tows anything despite age/mileage)....anyway we recently completed a longish trip with a boat ....

  • We have a 140 bhp Cali and found it had plenty of power, even on long hills. Boat weighs about 190kgs, add to that road trailer and sailing clobber.....vast improvement on other vehicles we have used...in essence the 140 perfectly fine for the job, plenty of 'grunt'
  • Cali and trailer were very stable on the road, including driving through 'biblical' rain storms yesterday...
  • Our road trailer already had a longer mast support but if you are considering using the Cali a 1.8 m or above support will be needed
  • Detachable tow bar really easy to use, no problems
  • We had the tyre pressure warning light come on half way through the trip, checked tyres and all correct...not sure why it came on....anyone know how to reset this btw ?
  • For those that are interested in mpg ( we aren't really) we averaged about 36 -37 over about 700 miles ....
  • Bike rack perfect for drying wet kit....
  • Of course the main advantage is that wherever we sail from we have tea, coffee, biscuits, cake and of course beer on tap......perfect !
In summary....the Cali turned out to be really good for the job we wanted and actually so much more.....but then the more we use it the more we love it ! ;)

Good write up. Thank you.
The tyre warning light will come on if the pressure in 1 or more tyres varies by more than 10% from the set value. This can happen in hot weather as tyre pressures will increase and increase more if driving, especially long distance, and if towing because of the increased weight on the rear wheels/tyres.
When cold, check the tyre pressures and if correct then you need to reset the Tyre Warning.
The Tyre Pressure Reset is part of the dashboard Multi Function Display.
If you have the Multi Function Steering Wheel. Ignition On, R hand control, Press OK, Select MFD then OK, Scroll down to Tyre Pressure and press OK. Follow instructions. Or check handbook.

Not in our manual but we've been there, done that, got the tshirt!

WelshGas....thanks for the info and tip....we don't have the multi function steering wheel and the handbook says there should be a reset button on the central console...we haven't. I'll give VW a ring tomorrow !

Ok. If you don't have the Multi Function Steering Wheel then you use the buttons on the wiper stalk.image.jpg

Ah excellent....I'll give it a go.....many thanks :)

The only thing to add to this very helpful advice is that you have to push the button underneath the stalk to select any further options and reset the Tyre Pressure Monitoring System.
It's a shame that VW can't update the handbook with a small inset page of additions.
