Hi everybody
I'm having some issues with my ignition key or lock. It won't turn smoothly when I try to start the engine .. when putting force on it, it locks up,,, only wiggling it, makes it turn. I'm afraid at one point I hear a small cracking sound.. I tried some WD40, but this doesn't help a lot..

To avoid future problems, which will only get worse, you will have to replace the ignition barrel . That is probably the only way to effect a permenant repair.

Okay..thank you for your answer.. I was hoping for an easier solution, but I guess this needs to be done at one point. I once had a car where I needed to change doorlocks which in the end meant I was walking around with additional keys. Will I be getting a new ignition key with this replacement ?

I'm not sure. If it is the Barrel - Yes, if it is the switch - Maybe.
If you get the parts from VW then they maybe able to supply a correct replacement based on the Key number or vehicle Vin to avoid a second key.

Use oil, not WD40. Sewing machine oil or engine oil. Spray does not lube locks.

I wouldn't use oil at all, that will eventually build up with dust that forms a gooey paste that will gum it up.
If you need to clean it out use a electrical contact spray that will dissolve any build up and then evaporates to leave no residue.
Periodically use a lead pencil on the key itself as this will form a dry coating on the inside of the lock barrel.

If the barrel has worn so much, a replacement is the only sure way to prevent getting stuck somewhere.

Once the ignition switch or barrel starts playing up then lubrication rarely gives a permenant solution.

Many thanks for all your advice... I guess I will give the contact spray and the lead a chance and if that doesn't work go for a replacement,,,
