Camp site in the new forest

Hi all, looking to go down to the new forest after the half term to do a bit of track cycling and walking. Any ideas for a nice site plugged in or not and walking distance from a pub with a nice local bitter?

Hi Steve, can't recommend any sites in the Forest but I think most of the forestry sites are now closed spent the day on Sunday in the Forest and I think it is at it's best in autumn

Setthornes near Sway is open all year. Great site but you do need your own loo and they don't have showers.

Red Shoot Inn in Linwood is nice and as close to a pub as your likely to get

Hurst View. Right on the sea. Pubs near by.
Campfires allowed.

Roundhill is also good near Brock.

We were there at the weekend. would recommend avoiding Holmsley - almost all hard standing and caravans, felt very unwelcoming. we ended up at Long Meadows, large grassy field, very friendly, 10 minute cycle to Brockenhurst. lovely place.

Also it's the bonfire and firework event there this Saturday

Setthorns is my usual site for the New Forest at this time of year though, but as already pointed out, you need your own bathroom and I don't think there are any pubs that are particularly close by (about 2 miles is closest).

I went down to the Forest on Tuesday, first choice a Britstop was closed for the winter, Setthornes was full, so had a look at Holmsley. It was grim! It's probably great for families but not for me, so ended up at West Meon on a great little site on a farm. Long grass, no loo, no noise (apart from wildlife) and one other van....great. I forget how busy/manic the forest gets during school holidays, even this late in the year.

Pat and I are booked into Setthorn for 3 days from Monday. Weather looks dry so looking forward to a few good cycle rides and the pub I'm told is 10 minutes cycle away.

Do you have details for this site? Sounds lovely and always nice to have a few more options during the winter.

Decent fireworks at Hurst View on Saturday...so many VWs on the site.

Brocklands Farm. They have a website with contact details etc. When I was there I asked if they closed for the winter. They do but will let you stay if you are totally self sufficient, which appeals to me. It's located adjacent to the old Meon Valley railway, which is now a cycle path. If you are using the site or their Glamping lodge you are free to walk on the farm footpaths, which link up with public footpaths. They are on the Pitch Up web site but I called them direct.

When are you at Redshoot, I keep thinking about going there and it is only about 10 miles form me. great pub with great food.

So we have just returned from a 4 night (was 3 but being able to be spontaneous with the Cali we stayed an extra night because we could!) trip to Red Shoot and thought I'd write a quick review for those who may be looking to stay here.

A very friendly welcome and we were duly shown to our pitch - we had asked for a fairly flat pitch with hook-up (quite pricey at £6.50/night), as much of the site is on a gradient. We had declared our novice status being our first trip away and were told any problems, just ask. Hooked up, roof up, awning out in around 10 minutes.

The shop was well-equipped, useful 'tourist' information leaflets available and the showers/loos were exceptionally well maintained - underfloor heating was a bonus.

You can walk straight into the forest from the site (indeed the site is in the Forest itself). We had a meal at the Pub, the Red Shoot Inn, one night which was delicious, plentiful and of very good quality. A very good menu, with specials on the board. They also brew their own beer.

On arrival the site was, what we considered, fairly busy; by leaving yesterday it was heaving and we were all pretty packed-in. Perhaps what one would expect for the Easter weekend but it did seem a little over-capacity for my liking.

We would definitely return and recommend. Cost per night for 4 of us, with associated hook-up as aforementioned, was £43.

I believe it's on the high side Rob. It was peak Easter school holidays though.

Just returned from britchcombe farm uffington . Great site fires allowed £8.00per adult and three good pubs within a hours walking along footpaths. Free showers and a very nice tea room on site. Close to ridgeway and white horse.
