I’ve yet to sleep up top but surely you just half close the roof cover and leave a gap too small for the pillows to fall through?

The best way that I have found to stop pillows falling off is to stuff something under the mattress, another pillow - a stuff bag of clothes - scatter cushion - whatever. Stuff it under where your pillow goes and then it provides a lip that keeps the pillows from falling off.

Its not easy being green...
Can't say I've looked for (or thought of) one... Indeed its a bit of a performance to get it in and the packed size still takes up quite some space, though i would imagine there would be no less huffing and puffing to fight it into a compression sack 
But of course they exist, a quick google got me this:

i would be looking at any down filled sleeping bag at least 3 season they are much warmer and compress small ,just get them washed by a specialist at the end of your season,they will last years.
We have mountain equipment bags 4 season ones they must be now 30 years old cosy.Of course not cheap you do get what you pay for.

I’d get none of these - either go for something super cheap in Decathlon or go for a down filled proper bag (e.g. Rab, Mountain Equpiment, Sea to Summit, Marmot, etc) which will last you a lifetime. I still have a Rab 5 season one that I bought in about 1991 and it’s still going strong (it’s for winter mountaineering not campervanning).

Yes now if I was going to basecamp and sleeping over before the assent I would agree with you. But coming from camping to the Cali I don't want it to feel like I am camping LOL plus we have a heater. sleeping upstairs is like camping surrounded by canvas not much heat gets up there .

We have a north face double sleeping bag which gets used when it’s really cold.
When it’s warmer we have a double fleece sleeping bag ( two singles that can be opened up & zipped together). Purchased from a outdoor outlet store in the US.

We just use a kingsize duvet from home, the anticipated weather dictates whether it's a summer or winter one.

Another shout for a duvet - we use the night owl washable duvet, is light, squashes small and is v cosy!

ha ha, the old thatch is a bit thin for me, socks as well for sure, normally when outside temps are sub zero, don't use the heating overnight.
Socks at home but no hat unless the heating is broken !

in warm weather just open the sleeping bag and use as a duvet and sleep in the liner

We are using one duvet each, thin ones in summertime and thick ones in wintertime, primarely because up till now I could not find a sleeping bag with the zipper up front (like the sleeping bags for small children): I don't like the zipper sideways.
