Shake "rattle" and it's getting dull

I might have just found the answer to my own question. It appears that after 6 months it is up to you to show the fault is inherent and was there at the time of purchase.

From the This is Money website.

"Under UK law, buyers in England and Wales can get a partial refund or full repair up to six years after the purchase was made (five years from discovery in Scotland). The refund should take into account how much use the customer has already had of a product. Ultimately, a county court would decide this.

However, the likelihood of getting such a refund is dramatically reduced after just six months. The reason is that for six months after the purchase, it is up to the retailer to show that a fault on an item is down to the actions or misuse of the buyer, rather than an inherent fault in the product.

After six months, the burden of proof switches to the buyer and it is they who must then show a fault is due to some inherent problem, something that can be almost impossible in all but the most straightforward cases."

That's completely different. You have quoted from the Consumer Rights Act 2015 (might be one for roof corrosion!) The 3-year manufacturer's warranty is separate and distinct from the act.

Fully understand that. But the fact that there is a six month milestone in the Sale of Goods act may well be influencing the dealers response. I wonder if that is an official VW position or a dealer interpretation.

Hmm. I'd like to see where this warranty qualification is documented.
I have just phoned VW and they have confirmed this. Rattling door posts are part of having a campervan...

Just re-read last post and to clarify what I wrote -the man at VW customer care confirmed that rattles in the door post are not covered unless I can prove something has failed. "Bad design" of plastic fittings so that they rattle is not covered. The van is "fit for purpose" as I can still use it as a "camper van".

He has taken my details and will get back to me if there is any goodwill action that can be taken.

Just had a conversation with Jordan at VW Customer Service. He has confirmed that there is a clause in the warranty that all adjustments must be made within 6 months and are not covered under warranty after that -it is entirely up to the dealer.
He quoted doors going out of alignment, rattles that start after 6 months and anything that could be attributed to wear and tear as examples of things NOT covered by the 3 year warranty.
I'm really shocked by VW's lack of interest.:(

Hi, sorry I'm late to the party.
My Cali had a windscreen rattle every time it went over 50mph. I took it to VW who removed and re-fitted 'a trim' now it happens when I go over 40mph!
It's going back to be 'fixed' again. When it does I'll ask what the trim is and let you know.
I can only think it's the plastic trim behind the wipers.

Incidentally, when I explained the problem the VW technician said occasionally seeds / nuts can fall through the vent slots in the trim and rattle up and down the bulkhead void.

Ted
Further to the above a persistent VW technician has located my windscreen rattle.
At first they were convinced it was the trim vibrating at the front edge (where the trim abuts the plenum at the engine bay), so they fitted fitting rubber underneath the trim. This made no difference.
Then after several runs out and packing various areas they realised the grommets in the trim move, as they are not a tight fit.
Grommets removed and another run resulted in the noise disappearing.
Oh the joy of a quiet Cali, bliss!!

So if anyone has a windscreen rattle remove the grommets to see if the noise goes. If it does these grommets can be bonded in place.

To clarify the trim is the plastic cover at the bottom of the windscreen, where the windscreen wipers pop through.
VW use the same trim for LHD and RHD vehicles, and the grommets are the inset discs which infill the holes they don't need.

I hope this helps.
