Hi all,

We're currently in Freiburg in the Black Forest and are travelling to Salzburg tomorrow. I'm sure I've been told that there is a scenic route that goes along the north side of the alps but can't find any details - everything just refers to the 'romantic strasse' which runs north to south in the Black Forest. Does anyone have any ideas or recommendations?

(Also - We've been told to avoid the A8 at all costs as it's being refurbished so is very slow and difficult driving with narrow lanes).

We're staying at www.camping-freiburg.com based on reviews from the forum - and it's lovely! This forum is a wonderful resource
Any information or recommendations gratefully received!

Thanks,

Jez

I took the A8 in Spring from Stuttgart to Munich once (at about 5pm) and it was okay. I think the part Munich-Rosenheim (A8) is more crowded (as the Autobahn from Innsbruck is joining close to Rosenheim).

Often crowded. Bavaria/Bayern starts their school holidays the 29th July.

I think you mean this one: http://www.deutsche-alpenstrasse.de/en/home

We have a TomTom .itn or Garmin .gpx file of this route for you, if you want it. Just send us a PM.

They look to almost intersect, a North / South meeting an East / West - bookmarked & added to The List, many thanks!

Hmm, is it possible to load a gpx route into the VW Satnav? Apparently the google maps app doesn't support this any more
@bvddobb kindly sent me the gpx file but I have no way to use it at the moment.

Don't know about the VW satnav. I can load it into a TomTom or Garmin, but those are the only satnavs I know... :sorry

If your satnav has a slot for a memory card can you not load in on that and import? Looks like you can on mine but not tried as I do it via web and carnet.

Carnet won't let me load a POI file on the ipad, says you have to use a desktop
Don't have the ability to write to a memory card unfortunately so can't test that out. Thanks for the suggestions though! I guess I'll just have to go old school and follow road signs

Well, if you're interested in this kind of routes, you may have a look here:
There are many more than just the two mentioned in this thread. Most with links to route-specific sites, .gpx-downloads, etc.

Thanks again all.

@bvddobb - how long did it take you to drive it? The website says to allow four to seven days! I was planning on doing it in a day with an hour's stop for lunch

We didn't drive it yet. We are planning it for our next trip, starting in two weeks' time. We plan to do roughly this route in a week, then roughly the Österreichische Romantikstrasse another week ( northern part one way, southern part back), and then roughly the southern part of the Swiss Grand Tour, another week. Half a week to go there, half a week to come back. Four weeks in all.

You will be there before us!

My route app says it's a 9 hour drive, all in all.

Well we arrived in Salzburg this evening. We did half of the route yesterday and then half today. We only stopped at a few of the sights but the scenery was absolutely incredible! We've agreed we'll come back and do it next year but allow at least a week.
We've done 1650 km in total so far, stayed one night in Citi Europe, two in Freiburg at the excellent www.camping-freiburg.com, one in Lechbruck-am-see at the reisemobileplatz by camping via Claudia and now first night in Salzburg at the lovely www. panorama-camping.at. Absolutely loving it so far. Cali has been amazing - coped with the Alpes easily
Thanks all for your help and advice
