Almost didn't post this - but prepare to scoff at a silly Billy. Drove off from parking near Borth beach Tuesday. Pulled over after 50 metres to change from sunglasses. A big white stopped alongside to point out my tailgate was open. (I had not closed it..) Ran back up the road fearing camera bag etc strewn along.
Nowt had fallen out fortunately.

Did it myself a couple of weeks ago at a railway museum in Belgium. Felt a right prat!
 
I've done it, regretted it and got the tee shirt :shocked
 
It is amazing that although there is a warning "ding" for almost everything else there is not one for this the door open picture on dash which is too often missed.
 
After reading this thread, I had a little panic earlier, but it turned out the windows were just remarkably clean!!
 
Never done that in 31years owning my Westy. OTOH I have driven off twice with the roof up - once in 1993 and once in 2008. The extra drag becomes noticeable above 50 mph. No harm done on either occasion, fortunately.
 
Not unheard of for certain (ex) politician to leave children behind so tailgate seems almost reasonable to me..I know my preference if forced to choose!!
 
We have done this too - it was a slight difference in the sound that alerted me. I don't think this would happen if you have a bike rack on the back (like we have now) - the noise of it slamming down would probably be a reminder.
 
Of course it gets ever slightly embarrassing when coming home from a long trip of mostly wild camping and stopping off to collect a few groceries at a services :sad

Came out of the MnS simply food, put the carrier bags on the rear shelf together with the rest, duvet bag etc ....

and three hundred yards down the road stopped to retrieve a 50 yard swathe of the contents of my MnS bag ..... and also the contents of my Laundry bag which had conveniently split on impact spilling all my dirty laundry along the rather crowded public roadway :oops::oops:
 
yep guilty too! now it's part of my check round before driving off list!!!!!
 
Never driven off with it open but have locked van and walked away, luckily noticing before going for day out. Done it at least twice possibly 3 times!!
 
ah yes have done that one as well!
I also worry that one day I will shut tailgate and not noticed rear corner cupboard door is open - I have been about to do that several times but luckily it is already on the watch out list!
 
I haven't done the tailgate trick but I've driven away with the side door open. Thought it was a bit windy, must have left the sliding window open, so I stopped to close it before I'd gone a mile and was horrified when I saw the door wide open!
 
The display on dashboard 'pinged' for us showing tailgate had not locked before we set off ! So I wonder how far you drove with it open?

Sorry to dig out an old thread but that just happened to me for the second time. But I don't even have a picture on the dash when that happens. Is it normal? Reading you I feel I should have ,in a similar Manner than the other doors.
 
Sorry, I checked and indeed I have this little difference when the door is open. It is so subtle I never notice in almost 2 years of ownership!

I have to "fess up" also. I've done this with disastrous consequences....

'Twas the day of my daughters wedding. I had made the wedding cake.

I had to deliver it to the venue and assemble it and then rush back for photographs - and it was absolutely pi55ing down...

I parked in the venue carpark and rushed out with the 3 tiers of the cake - spent about 20 mins assembling it. Then leapt it the car forgetting that I had left the tail gate open, and reversed into the side side of a barn. OUCH

Ironically having a bike rack on probably contributed to this because I had got into the habit of using the wing mirrors - so everything looked OK when reversing. But there was so much rain I could not hear the engine let alone detect any outside noise to alert me to my impending doom.

A bloody alarm would have prevented this !!! as you say everything else is alarmed.

A day I won't forget .......
 
I don't get a ding when I leave my headlights on unless I lock the door - and I don't get one for the sidelights at all which is worse as I'm less likely to notice them!

If I reverse and my rearview camera shows me the sky instead of the road behind me, it might be i‘ve forgotten to shut something…
 
When I did it it cost me £400! Reversed into a neighbours garage door. When I went to confess she cheerfully said "Oh it was fairly broken anyway", - that was before she saw it!
 
I did it once after cleaning, thankfully no damage but I felt a right prat. Saw a T6 builders van a couple of weeks ago driving through Lytham St Annes with the tailgate open.
