Dash Cam Dilemma

If you position the blackvue just in front of the rear view mirror it is not so easy to spot, if on top the dash just cover it with something if leaving. The mounting is stuck in position but the camera is removable. F

Another thing you can do with the blackvue is turn off the lights either in normal mode or parking mode. I’ve switched them all off in parking mode so as to not draw attention to it. Back one is invisible behind the dark glass and as frenchie says front one is obscured by the rear view mirror.

At the end of the day whether or not it’s a target for thieves is dependant on where you park it and some luck. It’s a a judgement shout. Mine is in a secure car park most of its life and I’m kipping in it or driving it for most of the other time. If I was leaving it out on a road or as my daily drive and leaving it in public car parks I would probably have gone for a removable one. Most of the time when I leave it it’s on a camp site. No doubt it will now get nicked but that’s back to the luck element.

Do you leave it plugged into the socket when parked for long periods? I have the 412 and have been unplugging as I fear a battery issue?
Not sure about 412 but my 512 has options about switching itself off, never or after required time; found in the settings menu.

Just a quick heads up. If you have a Blackvue and when you do the firmware upgrade it resets the Wifi password to the default. You will need this when you connect via WiFi again. When you do it prompts you to change from the default. If for any reason you don’t have the default one let me know and I will PM it to you. I found mine by going in via the cloud and changing it from there.

Whilst on techie stuff the Carnet app like most is improving. Easier than the Web portal to search and send destinations to the Cali.

In my bmw the camera needed to be mounted on the dash due to the light sensor in the mirror. When its parked up in not very nice places, I just put a hat on top of it. The rear camera is protected by the dark glass. Its a pity that we need to do these things.F

I have a front-facing Nextbase 512 with the hardwiring kit (easy to push the cable into the trim around the windscreen / pillar / dash & fused into the middle row).

I have no frame of reference but find the menus & interface awful. The unit itself feels cheap. The sucker let go & the ring of the polarising filter scratched my OEM satnav screen. The Mac version of the computer software is also grim, used it once, but it’d do in the event you need to claim. Incidentally in those circumstances preserve the original SD card at all costs, the defence may kick off if it’s not the original card ...

Fortunately I don’t interact with it much as it auto powers on/off, other than to occasionally press the ‘save a clip’ button and periodically to pop out the SD card & reformat it with the camera itself once copied.
