Oil change due but not service

Hi All

My Ocean, which is on long life oil and long service intervals ( June 2017 ) has done nearly 10,000 miles and it says its due an oil change in 2500 miles .

I mentioned this to Eurovans Crawley (as its going in for some guarantee work to change the tap sensor next month ) and they said it isnt due, as its on the long life cycle , and it's just the light coming on and it needs to be reset that's all.

Just wondering does any one have any similar experiences to share ?

My experience of Listers is the opposite they are always trying to get me to use my services when perhaps not needed ironically. That's how they make their money after all.

My first service I paid extra to change the oil otherwise they would have just topped it up (which it didnt need). Full service recently oil change was included (3 years).

Does depend on your type of driving. The Oil Change interval light/warning does measure something in the oil, conductance? or something. So shorter trips can warrant a shorter oil change interval, but definitely at 2 yrs or 20,000 whichever is sooner, on Long Life Service schedule.

I'm having similar peculiarities with my 2017 T6 150PS Beach.

Oil service request/displayed on whilst I was in Italy, booked it in for an Oil Service on my return home. They carried out a Full Service on it, whilst they had it. The Cali was only 7x months old at this stage, with 15,500 miles on the clock. I paid for the first 4x services / 80,000 miles up-front, so was slightly perturbed at this.

I'm booked in again for tomorrow, now the Cali is 15 months old, with 32,000 Miles on the clock...... It's booked in for a recall on the full hoses. But the Oil service light is on again, which I mentioned to them when making the appointment. They've said, it's not due yet, and just needs reset..... Will have to wait and see how things play out tomorrow suppose.

May as well use it, now I have it suppose!!

26,510 miles in 2017
27,171 miles on its 1st birthday
31,834 to-date (over 15x months)

More importantly 112x nights in the Hotel California to-date. :happy

I’ll make a decision on an upgrade at ~5yrs old or ~150,00 miles. But 10yrs and 250,000 miles should also be more than achievable.

As it’s our daily driver and only car, it is paying for itself, so I can’t complain. Overall, it’s actually making me a saving, so just have to stay relaxed about the odometer.

It’s useage like these vans were intended for anyway suppose.

Oooo... we were last bought a Guinness in Trondheim (quite how anyone can afford to buy anyone a Guinness in Trondheim is beyond my intellect to comprehend) I trust Guinness in NI is somewhat more affordable. But if you are away most of July I expect our paths will not meet on this occasion. We will probably be in NI on 9/10 July.

My main concern is over which flag to stick on Amarillo to represent NI. I favour using Saint Patrick's Saltire at the moment.

The 12th and 13th of July are the main “parading” days/events..... If you want to watch some, I would suggest at Scarva House on the 13th as it’s a bit less chaotic than the 12th elsewhere. The “13th” is organised by the Royal Black Institution, and they do a “sham” fight (reanactment) there. It’s a “family” event.

Remind me closer to the time also, for some other suggestions etc.

So..... Recall work on replacement of fuel hoses completed today. No issues.

Whilst in, they reset to “Oil Service” which was reading -200 and is now reading 12,400 miles to go.

My “Inspection Service” was reading 10,400, but is now reading 18,600 Miles / 355 days to go.

All sounds like dark-arts to me.... But I’ll just do what the MFD tells me suppose!

If the service light comes on unusually low miles before required service interval the van hasn’t been set up right at PID. If you call your dealer they will note it and/or call it in to be set properly.

Thanks - some useful stuff there. I have not yet worked out our timetable, but will see if we can extend our stay in NI by a day or two.

I'd believe the service indicator and not the garage in this instance. As WG has said, the mileages that can be achieved between longlife services vary according to your driving style and use. The oil is checked by the vehicle itself and the service indicator will flag up when it feels an oil change is required. As this process is variable how would the garage know when it was due?
In any case, the fact that it says that an oil service is due in 2500 miles means nothing. You will probably find that this figure will change and may in fact go up. Mine did, several times. It eventually asked for an oil change at around 16000 miles. It's just the engine diagnostics doing its thing. Wait until it says that it's actually due.

Similar story re oil changes on 204 bhp 4Mot. I bought 'two oil change plan' and thought it would last 40000 miles but oil service light came on about 12000 miles. Levels were down a bit but still within range although it measures quality of oil not level. Garage thought it had come on early as should be on Long Life Plan and said they would reset but I said to just change it as oil is cheap compared to other costs. Now at 35000 (Aug 2016 reg.) and just had third oil change. Again garage not sure (!) but I'm just going with MFD and changing. Oil levels have been fine so far. Mixed driving with 3 x 75 work day miles average and rest taken up with longish weekend drives mainly north Scotland. Dark Arts indeed - I wonder if some factory setting has been cautious? For general info. the only other service item in that time was rear brake pads, they were 75% used but I just said to change to save going back in. I drive much less on brakes though than I did with my car, more 'leisurely and anticipating'. Tyres were change to All Season at 25000 miles.

I disabled the coasting function to prevent excessive break wear and it seems to be working, when enabled my foot was always on the breaks.
Unsure about the engine measuring the quality of oil? Is this true? I would assume that this type of technology in an engine unit would be very expensive.

All very interesting, I mostly only make long journeys , but it will be 12000,miles,when it’s due to change .
The garage said they will just reset . I’m going to ask vw what’s going on .
I wouldn’t have thought the coasting function would effect it or break wear ?
However I also use this function and also enjoy careful driving , if I do I can get around 40 / 42 mpg too (204 dsg 4 motion ) with Goodyear Vector 2

Now on 65,000 miles, Original Brake Pads etc: Last service at 60,000 miles less than 50% wear on Front and Rear Pads.
Extensive use of Coast Function and driving with the cars not the HGV's.
Oil changes at 20,000 miles although MFD indicated an additional 6,000 miles at last service.

It would seem that the changes to the T6 mechanics, although possibly helpful for MPG and/or Emissions are not so helpful for Oil changes and other service items. Time will tell.

You will acheive a better return on MPG with the coasting function enabled as it disengages the connection between the engine and gearbox as soon as you take your foot off the gas, returning the revs to tickover.
With this function disabled the engine will take up some of the breaking so your brake pads and discs dont do all the work, making them last slightly longer. Unsure of the fuel saving compared against break wear etc etc.

If VW Commercial garages are just reseting the oil service indicators because, in their opinion, vehicles on the Long Life service regime have indicated too early, then surely they're likely to indicate and receive their first oil service at a point beyond the Long Life oil service parameters. In your case at around 24000 miles.
The VW Long Life regime states a maximum of around 20,000 miles between oil changes.

If the vehicle is indicating that it needs a Long Life oil change at 12000 miles then I would also ask for it to be carried out. The above policy attachment states that LL oil services can occur as early as 9000 miles!

That document matches what I thought, all fine then. Thanks Borris. My last van was 180 manual, on time and distance oil changes, so much the same oil costs in my experience and no better fuel economy in the T6 despite regular use of coasting function. I used to coast a bit in manual to be fair .. tut tut

But I don’t follow your argument with regards to disabling the Coast function to improve Brake wear.
With Coast engaged as soon as you need to slow, just touching the Brake Pedal activates the Brake Switch . This happens before the Brakes Hydraulics are engaged so no braking at all. Activation of the Brake Switch de-activates the Coast function and enables engine braking automatically.
