What did you cook in your Ridge Monkey?

I got a Ridge Monkey for Christmas. Going to try it out for the first time this evening with a nice piece of sirloin :). Hopefully even with my lack of cooking skills I should be able to manage that ... fingers crossed.

Main thing to remember with the Ridge Monkey is always cook on a low heat or else you will just burn the contents.

We have had a mad rush on these over the past few weeks but we have a new delivery arriving on Monday of the XL version.

Just got my first Ridge Monkey yesterday.

So - what do we cook in it first?!

So many ideas floating about

- Bacon
- Eggs
- Muffins
- Brownies
- Pizza
- Meatballs + Sauce

Something more extravagant?!

Needs to be something decent so I can convince my wife it's a good idea to have one :)

Spanish Tortilla (Omelette) you know the one with the potatoes that Mary Berry cooked this week, see iPlayer ;)

Makes turning over a doddle :)

We have used ours like a raclette. Brilliant

Not had ours very long but so far i'm very impressed. It makes excellent cheese and onion toasties and woderful bacon butties.

Two more successful meals on the RidgeMonkey this weekend, sirloin steak burger yesterday and tonight we did chilli cheesy nachos.

Unhealthy I know but hey, we are on holiday

Well our first meal was a home made pizza (with frozen pizza dough) - lovely.

We've then used it a couple of times for bacon, brie and chilli paninis, very tasty.

A really great cooking device!

As we are on our first real trip while getting the RM i'm very happy with it so far .
Been making bacon/eggs , patatoes , toast , chickenbreast in it the last few days .
As i used a canister coocker to bake meat outside in a normal pan trying to avoid splatters and smells i must say the RM does the trick .
Tonights feature here at St-Ives campsite , went out and got some salade , rasped some carots , tomato/cumcumber .
Chickenbreast and a simple bag of prefab patatoes ;)
All ready within' 15min using just the RM.
Baked the potatoes using no butter , thrown them in a bowl coverd them up with alu paper , small amount butter to bake the chicken ....done all with thesame divice!

We're on our way to you now! ;)

Also can show this breakfast all made in the RidgeMonkey.

Quick lunch
And a "croque" like the French call it ...
For you guys a ham&cheese toast?

Specially everything with toasts i find very nice to make since having the RM.
Toastbread is easy to keep a few days and very easy to make.
Making a toast (actually making anything) you need only low fire .
The pan is very easy to clean on the inside .

The pan looks like this after making 4 toasts , if you just wipe it out with a paper kitchentowl (after cooling down) you could easy store it away and clean properly at a later time

We tried to do chicken curry in ours tonight. Started off ok, got the chicken cooked but then we ran out of room for the rest of the stuff and had to transfer to a larger pan!

Not really the monkey’s fault, just me trying to use the new toy for everything!

One thing was really useful, the chicken had loads of water in it so I was able to just turn the monkey on it’s side and drain it off :)

And was able to use the RM to warm the naan bread up while the curry cooked in the saucepan. :thumb

No photos taken, sorry! ;)

Is it a bugger to clean...?

No, just wipe it with a kitchen paper towel. Wash properly when you get home if you think it's necessary. I don't.

It's a good piece of kit. Makes a boring sandwich into a tasty toastie. And you can use it to heat those partly baked petit pans and have freshly baked bread. :)

A normal pan is easyer to wash up , as the two sides are not detacheble neighter the handle ....but still a good thing to carry imo.
I was thinking of drilling out the existing hinge pins and replacing them with something removable so the two halves can be used separately, doubling the cooking area and making it easier to clean. ..... what do you think?

Looks like there is a new version coming out where you can detach the plates at the hinge and it also has a detachable handle.

I did a large beef burger in ours last weekend and fine except the fat went everywhere when I turned it over :( (need the bin nearby next time)

I have asked Mrs Loz to make the Marry Berry Spanish tortilla (potato omelette) and freeze it in portions in chinese tubs so when we are away next month I can defrost one and drop neatly into the RM for frying :) will let you know how it goes...

What can you do in a Ridge Monkey that you can't do in a frying pan?
Hi.
I tried both a monkey and fry pan to roast vegetables and didn’t find much difference really.

I did sliced potatoes with rosemary several times and they are much better in the monkey.

I would say the main thing to remember is to take the silicon tool set out of the Ridge Monkey before putting it on the heat :(

Luckily I remembered it before too much silicon melting had taken place :D

I like to cook my own bread at home, has anyone tried bread cakes from dough in the RM?
I’ve done those “Petit Pans” in ours (the ones that are half baked). Quite handy to carry because they have a long shelf life, so if you run out of bread you can use those.

I very nearly did that too! Maybe we should attach a piece of bright coloured tape to the tool set so it sticks out to indicate they’re inside!

Just cooked the plastic utensils stored inside the Ridge Monkey. :(
