Isn't that the access you dug to use crossrail?

Sadiq Khan is investing £169 million into London's cycle network per year 2016 - 2021. The Government is spending double that on the A14 upgrade through the countryside over the same period. And that is just one rural road scheme. There is a more or less parallel guided busway which cost £181 million, again through the countryside, which opened in 2011.

Busway did mostly follow an old rail track so not a new development. Victorian era. Part of the Beeching slaughter of rural rail links being regenerated.

Does yours have the electric energising noise when you turn the ignition on?
Yes, it makes a chiming noise to let you know it’s on, nothing untoward.

Ours sounds like a fan running. Can't hear it outside but its audible in the car. Sounds like a computer fan. VW say it's normal for hybrids.

Yes, I think ours does too; also when it’s being charged. It’s not obtrusive.

Tesla owner near me went to South of France during summer and had no problems, he said France has better facilities than here (no surprise there). Stopped for coffee breaks as you would normally do and recharged at the same time plus overnight Hotel (with supercharge facility) stop on the way up and down. Never got to the worrying stage regarding range left in batteries.

It may be a bit more difficult when thousands of electric/battery cars are on the road wanting to access the charging facilities. Make petrol forecourt queues seem insignificant possibly.

Main route or meandering through the countryside?
I can guess which.:)

Main route down and up with 2 weeks normal holiday use in the south. Same as most people do in carbon fuelled cars.

And who paid for the " Free " electricity? and the Government contribution of £3,500.

Every amp should be charged for and absolutely no Government contribution nor reduced Road Tax. Also there should be a charge for the additional pollution and environmental damage caused by extracting the rare elements used for the battery etc: Then we can compare the " Real " cost of owning an electric vehicle.

Don’t forget that the oil industry is massively subsidised by the government. Who pays for the decommissioning of l the North Sea oil rigs? How were they paid for in the first place? Let’s not be naive... all industry asks for subsidies and tax breaks, hidden or open. Before you rail against the pollution from mining of rare earth metals, remember all the pollution created by driving a conventional car in highly populated areas. It’s all a balance.

In media terms vehicles are the scapegoat for pollution, little mention of war zones, shipping, aircraft and space rockets.

Seems the attention is now turning to our food carbon footprint and that we need to eat vegie diets, perhaps next will be the methane production of that.

Maybe the Ludites weren't wrong after all.:sad

If you believe the national news we won’t have any food in the U.K. after March ! Let alone veggies, that should help reduce the food miles!

I’m not sure that is quite what the press was saying. If Britain leaves the EU without a deal (unlikely) then there is likely to be shortages of perishable foods, e.g. lettuce and tomatoes, sourced from the EU, quite quickly.

This seems unlikely to me. At Calais or Santander they aren’t going to check a lorry of tomatoes leaving the EU for the UK, and at Dover or Plymouth if supermarket shelves were empty of tomatoes a lorry containing tomatoes is not going to face rigorous checks in our first week outside the EU.

Besides that, Parliament yesterday decided they didn’t want a no deal exit.

Hi Amarilo, That was my attempt at irony !

I have done 800miles in 13hours.
I would expect any vehicle I own to be capable of the same. If not, it's a no from me.
Why would I buy a touring vehicle with limited touring capabilities ...???
Save the Planet? If we need to reduce CO2 by 80% by 2030 (figures plucked from the CO2 laden air, I know) we all have to do our bit. Mass action better work, becauase you can see our politician leaders tend to be interested in other things. If you buy a fossil-fuelled now you won't be helping. Stop for a recharge and a coffee. Tell your MP you want charging stations sorted.

Don’t be so naive.
They are not the answer
They are not green
They will not save the planet

When a suitable alternative is present, I’m happy to jump aboard.
But please don’t believe the current crop of electric vehicles are good for the environment. They’re not, they are just as devastating as current fossil fuel vehicles.

I would love to embrace EV technology, I just can't afford it.

We needed to replace our second car. It only does short trips so an EV would have been ideal. I had my heart set on a Renault Zoe but I could not make the numbers work. Ended up buying a Skoda Citygo for less than half the price.

You seem very sure. How are electric vehicles just as devastating? What alternative are you waiting for? And with the hottest February on record, do we have time?

And unfortunately, as recent figures have revealed, with the diesel fleet in decline and more petrol vehicles being purchased instead CO2 levels are now going one way.......UP!

Politicians can't seem to collectively make up their minds on anything these days. How long ago was it that they told us we needed to buy diesels to reduce CO2 levels to save the planet? Rather than banning diesels, more research into making them cleaner might just prove more environmentally beneficial than sending us down another blind ally. I don't believe EVs are the answer, they just create another series of problems which will also need to be addressed.

Ive been round and round in circles on this in recent years trying to decide what's best to do in our position.
It seems that currently, we in the west cannot live the life we are accustomed to without damaging the planet, and there are NO magic wands on the horizon. That won't change until someone (government) grabs the thing by the balls and changes the framework by which we all live via regulation (or indeed, lack of).

The best we can do at a personal level is really research our options before making a purchase based on currently least-worse environmental impact for your expected useage.

So, to my eyes, and i'm welcome to be corrected and educated further, it seems that if you want long-term ownership, a family workhorse, versatile, with some long-distance travel included, your best option is a cali-type modern diesel vehicle - but if you need a small, nippy, low maintenance, commuter car which just gets you to work and back, an EV is a very obvious option - but neither are truly green.

Just amazing how shortsighted humans are. Reduce this, reduce that, ignore the main issue.
Even when all 20 billions will be riding horses and eat grass with them, it won't be a balanced ecosystem.
We are at the point when cow farts alone are a huge ecological disruption.
