DIY spare wheel lock

I appreciate very few folk will have the inclination tools and possibly skill to do this but for those that have or are interested read on. I have seen the spare safe but decided to make my own as i had some bits that lay around are thought iI would do what VW should have.

I think this is how VW should address the issue and I also realise its only a deterrent to get the unwashed
to move on to another poor sole, if you really want the wheel its still coming off.


The bolt is the original machined and welded to a spare lock set for a mitsubishi I had lying around. The collar machined from some scrap under the bench Then some paint and its done.

I nearly made one out of a 20mm hole saw.

Yes I think so although welding makes it more secure in my view and less prone to fitting error with that design. Also on mine the gap is too small to bash a socket in over the special bolt head.

People at VW get paid thousands not to come up with
this kind of stuff.

You could buy a spare wheel carrier for £50, modify it and resell/exchange it for a reasonable margin as a side line.
Probably wouldn't have time to out in the Cali though.
