So my 2013 180SE 4motion went in for oil change , minor service at 39k miles to my usual VW dealer .
Apparently fault code showing up for the Haldex clutch pump which is likely to need replacement with new differential unit at a fair old expense . I have had no issues , leaks or warning lights . Haldex oil was changed last year. They suspect the pump is breaking up .
Should I bite the bullet and go with it ? Best to do with the dealer or find a cheaper independent garage ? I feel I will get a better warranty by staying with the VW dealer .
Any thoughts or advice will be welcome.

Another question . Had the DSG and Haldex oil change done last year . They changed the DSG oil filter at that time , but no mention of a Haldex oil filter . Is there one ?
Thanks

Probably just a strainer as opposed to filter.

Do you know if they have checked the oil? Have had in the past just the Haldex pump fail and successfully replaced (oil was clean / fine) on an Audi. Have also shredded the Haldex clutch plates and had to have the whole thing replaced (~£4k) on my Audi S3 (oil contaminated with said clutch plates)

No they haven’t . It was changed only 5k miles ago . I need to ask them a few questions before I commit ! Thanks

Hi the clutch pump motors are known to break up on the heldex unit the vehicle will just need a new pump motor not a heldex unit. The problem with them is that they sit low on the vehicle and a slight knock causes the magnets to crack in the motor. When fitting a new pump there is a thick rubber protection shield that needs to be fitted around the motor. I have done quite a few of these now.

I noticed at weekend when clearing codes from exhaust temp sensor errors that we have a haldex pump problem

Parts ordered.... Just need to get busy.
Seems to be the achilles heel of the 4motion

Fixed ours today

New pump, filter and oil
Purged it with vcds and test driven in rain.

No more wheel spinning at junctions

Hi there,
Can anyone tell me the location of the haldex pump fuse? as yet I cannot find it

Hi Vw Guru . Can the rubber protection be ordered and retro fitted ?

Hi yes it can it takes a couple of seconds to fit :thumb:agreed
Hi VW Guru, I've got a similar issue with the Gen 4 Haldex Clutch Pump fault showing on a newly purchased Carista unit. I've found a replacement pump kit (new pump, filters, oil etc) but it doesn't come with any rubber protection shield. Is this what the shield is for? Could you please supply a part number for what you're describing and if say if its a VW dealer part only? I cant find it online.
Many thanks

@Bryan2411 , unfortunately VW guru is not active on the forum anymore. I am sure that someone with knowledge on this will come and have an update for you.

UPDATE: Having purchased a Carista unit which highlighted an issue with the Haldex Clutch the matter has been fixed.
The code showing was 00448 – Haldex Clutch Pump (V181). Googling led me to the following company and their wealth of information on the subject. It may have been explained somewhere previously but basically VW don't stipulate the filter within the Gen 4 Haldex Clutch system needs replacing. The same components are used in Land Rover and Volvo cars, but they do stipulate the filter change within the service regime. Full breakdown here:

I had a phone call with Matt (Owner) and a number of emails went between us. He supplied the full kit to resolve the issue for the Gen 4. at a price my garage said was extremely good value. Kit link below.

The kit even came with rubber gloves!
Full fitting instructions and a handy YouTube video are available too, so I did think about doing it myself as it appears straight forward, but limited access beneath the vehicle and fear of making a catastrophic error somehow tipped the balance. My local garage fitted it for an hours labour. The shame :(

Great customer service from Matt so more than happy to recommend the company and I'm happy to report Carista is clear with no error codes showing! 4Motion is back on!!!

Thanks @Bryan2411, will keep that in mind to be done if not specified as standard by the VW specialist when my Haldex needs maintenance.

Matt said most issues arise between 48-55k, mine had just done 50k.
Just passing 97,000 miles. Haldex serviced by VW every 2 years. No problems and nothing on Carista.
