I have a problem with the diesel space heater not working.

I’ve tried turning it on directly and also programming it to start, but to no avail.

The overhead control panel doesn’t show any problem (icon OK and heater is shown as active) but nothing is happening.

It was working OK in October, when I last checked.

The only thing that has happened recently is that I had VB Suspension fitted about 2 weeks ago, so I presume that thebattery/ batteries were disconnected, could this have an effect?


I would be very grateful if anybody can help.

Try resetting the Control Panel.

Switch Off Control Panel using L lower button.

Wait 30 secs.

Switch On using L Lower Button.

Does it work?

If NOT then try this.

For those of you who don't know, if you ever get any problems with roof stuck or any other error say with the heater, you are able to access the hidden menu in your control panel as used by the VW Engineers.

Access as follows:


1. Hold down the centre of the rotary button together with the menu button (button below with the squares on it)

2. You will get the hidden menu.

3. Rotate the rotary button to get to "VW diagnose" and select this by pressing on the centre of the rotary button.

4. If no errors are present it will display "no errors"

5. If Errors are present then a list of errors will appear

6. Press the centre of the rotary button again to delete all the errors

7. Repeat process above just to check that errors have dissapeared!

8. Re-configure the time and date if neccesary.


Any problems should be resolved assuming these are Electronic and not Mechanical.

Wasn’t expecting a reply so quickly, many thanks.

I only got round to checking everything yesterday after suspension changed.

Had to readjust the timer but both the roof and frig were working OK, but not the heater.

I put the Cali on charge for 24 hours but still nothing from the heater.

Will try your suggestions tomorrow.

Yes, put on charge last night for 24 hours and tried on hook up and also with engine running this afternoon, still no go.

Hi WelshGas,

As promised I went through your suggestions.

1. Reset Control Panel as you indicated but no change.

2. Accessed Error codes as you indicated and got the “No Errors” answer.

Don’t really know where to go next.

I think I’ll contact the people who fitted the VB Suspension just in case they have affected something, they also fit diesel heaters to trucks, so I’m hoping they can check and see what’s up.

If I find anything I will let you know.

Hi Eddie,
Still early days with the VB Suspension, so difficult to give any indepth comments (only mentioned the suspension as it could be linked in some way to the heater problem (rdv next week to check)).
On the suspension front, we were really impressed with the way the whole system has been designed to be fittedthe T6 without any major alterations to the vehicle (uses existing mounting/location points).
The main reasons we went for the VB were:
1. We do around 5000 miles towing a 1.8T caravan, so self-leveling was ideal as it eliminates rear end sag.
2. We need slightly raised suspension for driving off-road (muddy, rutted grass track in Yorkshire), not tested yet.
3. Spare wheel access greatly improved by putting the suspension to off-road (tried and it's a lot easier).
Too early for any handling or comfort assessment as yet, but both were obviously potential reason for our purchase.

I do hope you tried various stettings , as it don't kicks on on setting 1 when it's not could enough....
Are all the fuses ok ?
You say the icon shows ....like when the heather is on ? Not blinking ?

They could have damaged something hard to tell .

Thanks for your comments.
Have tried a few settings (7 and 10), after your comment I'll run through a few more tomorrow.
Also tried programming the heater to come on (after resetting date and time).
I checked the "Aux heater control unit fuse" (SC46 re.f LOZ fuse card) and it was OK.
The icon is on continuously once selected and not blinking, and the menu shows the heater as "Active", left it for a few hours to see if anything would start, but unfortunately it didn't.
Spoke to the VB fitting guys and have a rdv with them on Tuesday (they confirmed they had disconnected the battery to instal the VB susp).

Do you hear the fan start on it - it’s noisy esp outside then you’ll hear ignition and then fuel pump ticking. Or nothing ?
 
As well as the control unit fuse you mentioned there is also a 25A fuse under the passenger seat you need to check that as well.

Everything OK on Control Panel but nothing happening under car.

Used your Fuse Card to identify SC46, but didn't realise there was another under the passenger seat (drivers seat in my case as LHD Cali).
I'll go and check (25A).

I had a similar problem after VB fitment. Took it to main VW dealer and they said that a wire had come off the heater unit.
VB fit the control unit etc adjacent to the heater.
VW didn't blame anyone for the fault and it was done on warranty.

Checked 25A fuse under seat (SH11), was OK, even replaced just in case but no change.

Great,thanks for your help/info, I have a rdv with the VB people next Tuesday so will try and get them to sort it out, and avoid VW if possible.
Just to help me (Sorry but I'll have to explain to them in French), could you clarify what you mean by "control unit" (do you mean the remote?), and when you say that it was fitted next to the heater (what heater and where is it?).
Just for info, my remote is in the door pocket beside my seat and connected to the wiring under my seat (drivers as LHD).

The actual VB suspension air control unit for the air lines and compressor are under the van floor left side. Just in front of the Adblue and fuel tanks. The cabin heater is more to the right side of that. If you look under the Cali you will see a metal black panel covering it, the plastic undertray has a section cut out which is replaced by the metal section, you should also be able to see the metal flexi-pipe which is the exhaust from the heater.

VB do quite a bit of wiring in the power area under the left front seat. I'm not sure what parts are under the seat as it's impossible to see clearly with the seat in place.

OK, I'll have a look under the floor, but hopefully the VB guys will have a good idea what could be the cause, they also fit diesel cab heaters, so I hope they should be able to work it out.

Hi,
Checked and it's showing that the Eberspächer is selected as in your photo.
I believe this is the space heater and not the engine heater which I think is the Webasto.
