Major issue with gas safe

Having a major problem with the gas safe...

I've just put a new bottle in and wired it all up. I then closed it all up, with the plan of tightening everything up later.

When I got home I've gone to unscrew the lid, and it wont come off. It looks like the lid has slipped off the screwing threads. On top of that, trying to unscrew it has unscrewed the regulator, so gas is now leaking (I can smell it and hear it). I think that the regulator has caught in the top inside of the lid.

I've called the vw assistance people and they're sending someone over. I,ve obviously left the boot & windows open so the gas can escape.

Anyone else had any similar issues?

Nightmare.

Phew! All sorted.

The man from the RAC opened the lid with a huge wrench!

My guess is that the lid locked as a result of gas leakage and subsequent pressure increase inside the bottle chamber. The regulator could well stay untouched by the lid.

I don't think the pressure builds up.... I believe the gas safe has a hole in the bottom (so any leaking gas goes outside the vehicle. I think the regulator got snagged against the underside of the lid.

similar thing happened to me i had to us a large screwdriver to prize open the lid, it wasnt too badly damaged all things considered

Ive just had the same issue. The lid/cover starts to turn but is getting caught possibly by the regulator and gets stuck on mid turn. The regulator is not connected to gas bottle but must be catching lid. Should I try and use a wrench or screwdriver to force open or bring to dealer - any suggestions would be appreciated.

It is under warranty but if its an easy fix Id rather save my a trip.

The Gas Tap/Regulator has been incorrectly positioned. The Screw cap will go on but undoing the Screw cap causes it to jam against the Tap/Regulator.
Gas will not build up in the Gas Holder. Butane is heavier than air and if you look at the base of the gas holder there is a vent.
The Gas lid should Screw on very easily with 1 finger and only about a quarter of a turn at the end to seal. If it is tight putting on , Do Not Persevere Remove lid and reposition Gas Tap / Regulator.

i don't think you will find this is a Warranty claim. The Dealership might do it out of kindness, but all they will do is force the Screw Cap . It is unlikely to do any harm, maybe an indent on the underside of the lid.

Thanks. I understand but I cant open up the lid/cover to reposition the regulator. Ive tried nudging around with piece of wood and mallet but I think I try and force it with screwdriver.

I would try a piece of wood with large screws or bolts, positioned to act as a wrench. Like the Water Tank tool in the Forum Shop. Once you've passed the regulator once the lid will be riding up the thread and probably become free.

cheers I'll try that. really jammed in there! fingers crossed

Thanks for advice WelshGas. I couldnt get it open myself - but brought to dealer and they forced it open with some sort of claw wrench, just like you advised. No charge, so they were very kind because it was my fault as the regulator was not attached to cylinder and had wedged up against the lid so it couldnt turn. So lesson learned! - do not leave regulator unattached to gas cylinder (obviously turn value off when in transit) as when it moves due to road bump or ramp it will likely jam your lid. The lid is designed so that the regulator is attached and under the available space in the center of the lid. Obviously if there is no gas in the compartment the hose and regulator will be at bottom and there wont be an issue.

Cheers

Or you can change the whole Tap and Regulator assembly for the combined Calor Camping Regulator and never have that problem again.

Could you please expand on what the replacement calor regulator is? Have had the jam twice now and preference was to not leave the regulator attached, but maybe too conservative!

Thank you - I will get shopping.
Do you leave permanently connected to the gas cylinder, but turned off?

I have the same system as @WelshGas and I leave the regulator screwed to the top of the cylinder and turned off. Make sure you put the female end of the quick release valve on the end that goes to the cylinder as there is a closure valve in the end of it.
Then when you leave site turn off the gas at the regulator, separate the two bits of the quick release valve and put them back around the cylinder. There is no chance of fouling the lid.
I put a velcro band with the word Gas on it on the steering wheel when I put the gas on which reminds me to turn it off when I drive again. I put the velcro band back around the gas pipe when it's turned off ready for next time.

Thank you, very good advice. Just need to get the lid off!!

Hi Ben - I have had the same problem when I had the original VW valve on there and I used the same advice that Welsh Gas gave earlier on in the thread. I would try a piece of wood with large screws or bolts, positioned to act as a wrench. Like the Water Tank tool in the Forum Shop. Once you've passed the regulator once the lid will be riding up the thread and probably become free. You put the bolts into the sections in the lid of the gas lid, this determins how far apart the bolts need to be and using the extra leverage you now have, just turn it anti-clockwise. Once you have turned it a bit the obstruction will be out of the way & it will come off. As your Ocean is quite new you might find your local dealer helpful, as others have said, but it depends how far you have to go.

Thank you, will give it a try!!

Finally got round to looking at the lid. We had a spare bottle that we have been using and didn't need to use the internal burners. The way the lid sits down in the cupboard meant it was hard to get a piece of wood in there. Ended up using the handle of the tent peg mallet, holding the rubber end and pushing it half a cm at a time over 10 mins. Eventually went far enough that I could prise up at one side! Some hand blisters as a prize. Now to set up correctly. Thanks for the advice.
Ben

Mine was stuck this weekend, finally got it off by going back and forward with some force and its finally came off...
