Buying original VW mattress to then buy a topper?

We bought our Ocean 2nd hand and it came with the VW "comfort" mattress, and I like many here seem to are now thinking the grass may be greener on the other side and looking at other toppers. However I would need the original mattress to then use before even thinking about those available from brandrup, comfortz, zonesleep, etc.

Is there any way to buy the original VW mattress? Or would the thinner mattresses (brandrup and Comfortz both make one) be indistinguishable if used with one of the toppers from the three brands above? Or radical option - is the grass not greener at all, and should I stick with the original comfort mattress? (which I should say - I do not find especially comfortable)

My options are:
Original VW comfort mattress OR
Original standard VW mattress (but how to buy..) + TBC topper OR
Thin pad (comfotz/brandrup) + TBC topper

All thoughts appreciated!

Are you not happy with what came with the van?
I use original with a topper. Happy with the level of comfort.

I was thinking only of storage space, in that using comfort mattress plus topper means effectively there are two toppers in the boot - and with pillows and bedding we already travel stuffed to the max. Definitely an option I suppose!

Also wish those head restraints could be easily removed to save boot space but that’s another topic

As I understand it, the standard set up is a pad on the rear shelf and the seat. The comfort mattress is an extra and goes on top and folds out to cover all three much as a topper. When you say you may need the standard VW mattress are you referring to the pad on the rear shelf? We thought we had ordered a Comfort mattress for ours and it came without..

I found the rather thin std comfort mattress really uncomfortable for my boney hips. Had a 30mm double bed memory foam topper kicking about so took the foam out of the CM and used as templates to cut up the memory foam then added this on top of the std foam inside the CM cover. Then used the now empty but very soft quilted 10mm ish thick topper cover as a mattress protector with fitted sheets over same. I now sleep very well without the need for a separate topper and it all still folds back onto the shelf with sheets etc still attached ready for quick deployment.

Sorry for confusion - by "standard mattress" I meant the standard pad that VW give for the rear shelf. The Comfort Mattress is in fact not a topper for the standard mattress, it is a single piece - a thicker rear mattress plus two fold out pads to cover the seat.

The reason for wondering re: "standard mattress" plus after market topper is because the space taken up by the comfort mattress, for limited benefit, is huge. When we hired an Ocean before buying it had the regular mattress and I don't remember it being massively worse..

We went through exactly same issue and have ended up not bothering with either! We have the rear shelf on the high setting, which is then flush with the folded down seats (although this may not be the case in earlier models) we then have two toppers over the lot which fold onto the shelf during the day. Still bulky but all useful bulk and properly comfortable for bony hips! Plus more useful storage in the boot.

We sleep in the pop-top ( very good bed) , take no matrass downstaires as sleeping downstaires is rarely.
