Four intrepid California owners, one an Ocean, one a Coast, one a 2 seat Beach and one a 3 seat Beach owner, decide to explore a cave. While deep underground there is a flash flood and water levels in the cave rapidly rise trapping the owners on a narrow ledge. Fortunately, one of the owners has brought with him emergency oxygen and two face masks that will connect to the one supply.

Two owners can escape together, and one can then return.

Due to various competency levels escaping from the ledge takes different owners different times.

The Ocean owner would take 30 minutes
The Coast owner would take 35 minutes
The 2 seat Beach owner would take 45 minutes
The 3 seat Beach owner would take 50 minutes

For example, if the Coast and 3 seat Beach owners escaped together, it would take 50 minutes; and then an additional 35 minutes for the Coast owner to return with the cylinder, a total round trip of 1hr 25 minutes.

In hours and minutes, what is the minimum level of oxygen required for all four California owners to escape safely?

Is it a trick question? Only the Beach Owners were young and agile enough to go caving? (that's a dig at me BTW).

Can we rephrase the question so it’s not a cave and waters rising?

It depends if the Coast owner is always the one returning with the face mask as he is the owner of the equipment . Is so its X.

However as you mention min he could transfer the face mask to someone who is 5min quicker. Although this could have been done the first time around to save time. So many answers. I've gone with X but it could be less ......

The idea is find the minimum amount of oxygen for all to escape safely - ownership of the oxygen cylinder is irrelevant. The example I gave of the Coast and 3 seat Beach owner escaping together was purely to demonstrate how you might calculate the timings, and not an indication of who may or may not escape first. If you want to amend your answer to something else, reply here.

I need to amend my answer as its wrong!

Surely they would all have just stayed there until Elon Musk developed a prototype submersible unit capable of extracting all 4 occupants at once while simultaneously accusing other would be rescuers attempting to use conventional methods of being paedophiles?
That’s what I said. If less controversially.

After such busy day, the Ocean guy can make them a nice cup of tea :D

Or have an ice cold beer or 3.
Please can we have more adventures and great places to camp this is ultra boring after a busy week at work elementary mathematics really!!!!!
What’s happening to this forum!!!!

You should have a vote for they will all die. You can't breath oxygen for long without turning up your toes

With all the rain this year I would have thought the cave would already be flooded so would that mean they used the same mount of air getting out as in.

Hi Amarillo. Is this a subliminal SOS call. Are you guys stuck in a cave with the kids and need to give them something to focus on to stop them panicking whilst you plan your escape.

Or is it one of those, “let’s take the kids on an adventurous day out, the challenge will do them good and we can do some family bonding”, type activities?

Love the question.

The beach guy could boil his 12v kettle, cook the battery and they all surive for days eating cooked battery. The oxygen never runs out because it was never specified how much oxygen they have and how much they consume Whilst escaping!

Personally I would post on this forum to see if anyone have ever encountered this issue before and then return to VW for a warranty exchange of the oxygen or call vw assist to fix the issue until I could get to the dealer for a top up, BTW the manual doesn’t state anything about oxygen and ledges !
