Anyone use a wood burner?

Seeing that advert brought back a memory.

When my wife hitch hiked down to the Atlas Mountains and beyond as a youngster, her boyfriend was offered 20 Camels for her by a friendly local :)
Bargain - sorry could not resist - outrageous!

They may have been serious. I visited the Atlas Mountains just a few years back and discovered that city boys from Marrakech regularly drove out to the Berber mountain villages at the weekends to find wives who "believed in traditional values" (ie would be willing to stay at home and do their skivvying for them). The lovely chap I met there with two daughters wearily explained to me that the "bride price" he'd receive would be the only way he could support himself and his wife in their old age. Very poignant.

Link to the thread topic: as far as I remember it he had a wood burner. ;)

Disagree, I'm afraid. As an individual you can make a personal decision regarding smoking, but what is the overall Risk Reduction, if there is one, if tobacco products were banned totally. What other risky substitutes would replace it, drugs, alcohol and what additional problems for those that grow or process the tobacco. The population would have to cough up the lost revenue to governments as the revenue exceeds the total cost of treatment for tobacco induced illnesses, at least in the UK, not elsewhere where centrally funded health care is not the norm. Smokers, if they succumb earlier utilise less of their savings/pension which is of benefit to others.
Individual items of risk, whatever they are, are of no real significance unless considered as part of the overall risk of life in general.
If you want to be totally " risk averse" then that is impossible because just staying in bed has its own Risks. All you can do is make individual choices to minimise the greater risks. So don't walk on the motorway, keep to the pavement.

I was joking. Sorry, should have put a smiley or something. :cheers

[EDIT] But, reading your post, the logical implication of what you're saying would seem to be that a disease that carries off members of the population at an age when they've passed both reproductive and economically contributive status would be a good thing. Wait... I know...

Still joking, but even so... ;)

Unfortunately for some people their economically contributive status seems to be inversely proportional to their reproductive capabilities :) :)

I really need to go for a walk but it's so warm next to our fire. We have always had a multifuel, this has been in about 9 years and as yet I have never had to buy any wood for it. Rarely burn coal.

Built the hearth and fireplace myself and had the fire and flue fitted by a Hetas engineer.11111111.jpg

Really nice fire and surround, but for safety’s sake, the wood should be kept away from around the fire. Combustible material should be kept in a secure location.

Hello,
What is the fan you have on top, I am interested to get one.
Thanks
Hi Nathz.

Its a Valiant, I am pleased with it and Mrs K believes the heat distribution is much better.20210118_193256.jpg

Or if you're into expensive toys get yourself a Stirling Engine (a closed cycle regenerative heat engine, since you ask). Mine is from Warpfive. I stopped the fan blades for the photo, but when the stovetop is hot it spins like mad and certainly does push heat out around the room. Although the ones above on Amazon etc are a more cost-effective option!

Snap, we have the same Clearview stove. Awesome log burner and our single best home improvement. We swear they are good for mental health and the soul.:)

It's our third Clearview, after two house moves. When they first came out they were in a class of their own, still a real quality stove IMO.

We also have a Jotul, which looks quite Scandi/hygge but nothing like as controllable as the Clearview...

C'mon folks, stove shots pls.

Had a Jotul F3 in our last house, loved it, went cheap & cheerful this time with a Firefox but for less than £400 for a Defra approved stove it's been excellent.

Ours is 12y years old, used daily over winter and still on original glass, paint, rope, bricks etc. Still looks like new. So easy to light and control.

We have two wood burners. One must be thirty five years old. I fitted it in 1985 along with the fireplace, chimney etc. It was sent back to the factory before Christmas for a complete refurb and it's now as good as new again. It's in constant use.
The second one is in our pub shed. It puffs out wood smoke when anyone opens the entrance door. That wonderful smell adds to the pub ish ambience.

Extra large crate of Ash for £265 delivered in the summer. Think that’s around 3 cubic meters.
So around 3 ton? Is 1 cubic meter = 1 ton ?
Then transfer (good cardio for the wife :D )
To the log store under arbor. Open at the front to allow for air circulation.
They use sustainable wood from Lithuania, I found a bullet from WW2 from a German gun that was lodged inside the wood, then burned out and did a bit of of a Pfffffffff whilst burning.
Found it in the grate the following morning.

From International Ammunitions Association.
German 7.9 mm was standard issue in the German army in WWII. It’s impossible to give an answer to your question: all kind of guns using the 7.9 cartridge. Rifles, machine-guns from Germany or occupied countries (so called Beutewaffe) using the 7.9 cartridge at that time…

We have a lot of wood from various tree work around the garden and adjacent, including still some left of a big eucalyptus (gum tree) that you'd think would burn well but doesn't. Fruit tree wood is great. No unexploded ordnance found so far... :)

Around here, I think the people that sell firewood usually do it by "the load" so it's a bit random. The weight per cubic metre will doubtless vary immensely depending on how dry the wood is and whether you're taking about stacked logs, and whether or not split, versus loose in bulk bags.

Run the whole house on wood. Rayburn in the kitchen and Hunter with a back boiler in the lounge both linked to a thermal store for rads / hot water. Jotul and Aga woodburners in 2 other rooms. Solar thermal for hot water in the summer (panels linked to thermal store). Keeps me busy!
