Keeping Leisure Battery Charged at Festivals

Looking at the forthcoming summer of festivals has got me thinking about Glastonbury (one year maybe). The campervan area is open from Tues at 12:00 before the weekend and you’re likely to be leaving the following Monday. There is no EHU. I don’t really want solar panels fitted but wondered if a portable solar panel may help keep the leisure battery charged for the fridge. I suppose I then worry about it being taken! I think generators are banned. Any ideas?

Running the engine for 45mins everyday, should give enough charge for the next day. It helps if you either use the max charge feature if it's a later van, or put seat heater on lowest setting in older vans which don't have the max charge feature. This makes the alternator charge harder for the 45 mins you have the van on.

Top tip, thanks. We're having the same quandary.

We have a small Jackery power pack and solar panel. The panels keep the pack charged to 100% & its good for charging phones/tablets/camera batteries (plus modest use of milk frother & hair tongs (!)), but ideally I'd like a way of using it to at least top the van batteries up. I could just use the 3 pin plug connection I suppose, but wondered if there was a suitable way of linking the portable solar panel direct to the van battery. Any sorf of adapter or maybe even going via the cigarette charging socket. Has anyone done this successfully?

Great tip. We’re in the same boat in August. Can’t abide warm beer!

Yeti coolbox will still have ice in it after 3 days, no power needed.

Running your engine at super eco Glastonbury will be frowned upon. Even disposable E-cigarettes/vapes are banned this year (I don’t smoke, was on tv yesterday)

Solar panel on the roof would be the easiest option, then there is no need to cart additional kit around. Just fit and forget; Portable panels are an easy target for thieves.

I have a dokio solar panel that i plug into a cigarette lighter. Ordinarily we park in the disabled section and there feel totally comfortable leaving it out and plugged in, but it works well if you can park facing the sun and putting it up inside the windscreen. I agree with the running the engine for 45 minutes being anti social

Barely noticeable if you do it at a busy period middle of the day, especially at a noisy music festival.
It’s not noisy up in the campervan fields. That said, many people do run engines, especially the motor home hirers.
For what it’s worth my batteries (2012 SE) have almost always lasted from Weds to Monday at Glastonbury with no need to run the engine.

a day? They should last for days if you drive up to your festival with the max charging on (this will charge the batteries to the fullest and not only 80%). Maybe the noise will be ok (I guess) but some may smell it but maybe it will only be necessary for one or two times so.. no big deal? Hope you have no issues with neighbours.
Have fun at the festival!

I have a solarcampersolutions.co.uk panel fitted to the roof which is great (although in France last summer we sought shade due to the heat). I have recently bought a Vtoman Jump 600x portable power station and a Dokio 120w solar panel for use with a garden room (Stuga). We find the these brilliant as extra power sources when ‘off grid’ with the camper so will now add these when packing for extended trips.

Many will probably be doing the same.
Would it be ok to buy a spare leasure battery and plug it in the 12 volt socket when needed? Might get a top-up for a day or so.

You might get away with it if you plug it in when all batteries are fully charged, but if you wait until the main ones are discharged then plug it in, it will definitely blow the 12V socket fuse. Not a recommended way of extending battery capacity, direct connection to a battery would be better with suitable fuse and fat wiring.

As @Steve1 said ALL leisure batteries when wired together should be at the same level of charge and also of the same capacity and type or you might get a significant transfer of charge and possible wiring damage if it is not upto the job.

To maximise your leisure battery capacity.
1. Pre cool the fridge for at least 24 hrs at home connected to the mains via your EHU while fully loaded
2. Place some freezer blocks in the fridge to aid cooling while travelling.
3. While driving fool the vehicle into fully charging the batteries to 100% by either switching a heated seat on or dipped headlights.
4. When you get to the sight leave the engine running while signing in and when you get to the plot leave the engine running until you have raised the roof.

Never knew about point 3!
Have done a decade of festivals in the cali and only had to run the motor once when parked in similar heat to today with fridge on the sunny side. Usually Thursday to Monday hadn't needed a top-up. Plenty of others seem to be running their motors - one in particular every mornign for their shower!

The T6.1 now has a Max Charge switch which does the same.

But……… I have noticed that if the leisure batteries are above 80% they then appear to transfer energy to the starter battery until all 3 are the same

I did 5 days at Silverstone last year, made sure the batteries were topped up at home first and pre cooled the fridge, completely filled it + added some frozen meats. We kept the fridge on 3, used lights and charged phones. At the end we still had nearly 50% left in the battery. 7 days should be easily do-able depending on what you plan to plug in.

An oceans batteries will last out a festival no problem

Ive taken my Cali to Glastonbury many times in very hot weather . No Solar Panels … Ive never needed them . I just use the fridge in the Cali . and the lights when we retire to bed . We charge our mobile phones from anker portable chargers . We Arrive Tuesday lunch and leave the following Monday . Ive run the engine on the van once for an hour, half way through the festival ( Ive seen many people do this so dont worry ) . My Cali is 10 years old . Never had a problem . Dont worry

I have found it useful to hang a light throw or air the duvet by tucking into the roof mech if the fridge side is towards the sun.
Significantly cuts down solar gain and even in this weather have turned fridge down to 3/4 as milk and beer getting frozen on the back wall at 5/6 (even with a baffle board to stop direct contact with fridge back wall)
Van is T6 Ocean

I also have a solarcampersolutions panel on my Beach and thoroughly recommend it. Easy to fit as it clamps to the roof rails and wires tuck behind panels. No effect on height. We use it annually at Le Mans 24hrs and it keeps lights, phones and Waeco CFX28 fridge going indefinitely without running engine.

Running your diesel engine for 45 mins a day will charge your battery but it may well not be looked upon favourable by your camper neighbours.
I concur, as a Glasto regular everybody is "squeezed" for space - the person behind you is not going to take kindly to diesel fumes unless there's a safe way to extend the exhaust above the top of the van. I usually buy small bottles of milk and freeze them all, I take some small drinking water and freeze these along with some freezer blocks and a backup freezer box in the awning or under the van have done us proud for the last 15+ years. But I also agree you're only going to have a limited supply of "cold" beer but that's what the cider bus is for and there are also many bars across the site serving everything from corporate lager to cask conditioned real ales :)

I done a wee 3 day festival a few weeks ago and used only 30% of the batteries in my 2022 coast…heading to Kendal Calling festival at the end of July Thursday till Monday and I’m very confident I’ll have nothing to worry about….these wee vans are bullit proof, go and enjoy ✌️
