    High mileage experiences.

hi, I would be interested to know forumites experiences of running high mileages on the old 5 cylinder 2.5 130ps engine. mine is a 2009 and has done 104000 miles. No major problems to date and it still sounds good. I always use V power diesel and oil changes at double normal intervals. I...

The CFCA 180 bi-turbo oil consumption

Having just changed the oil on my 2014 model California SE 180, I thought that documenting my experience might help anyone thinking of a similar purchase. I have owned the vehicle for four years, it's a good high spec vehicle and has the "D" category EGR. The mileage at purchase was 65490 miles...

New engine needed - what should we think about?

As @Steve1 said above. You need a 2nd opinion. Most 180 engines that suffer from high oil use due to failure of the EGR cooler have a milage of about 60,000 +/- miles ( 96,000 km ) The turbo oil seals at least need to be checked, compression check and an engine oil analysis for high levels of...

New engine needed - what should we think about?

All right, thank you for giving your thought on this! We will make sure to take the van somewhere else and have it checked properly before changing anything.

    SERVICE !!

Nowadays the manufacturers don't really have a "set" schedule - it's based on your miles, time or sensor readings, whichever comes first. So high miles, high use, expect to have an annual service. Low miles, low use, expect to have a service every 2 years. This can vary as well depending on oil...

New owner with basic questions about motor battery and oil..

Oil 7 litres. Do not put 8 litres in (2x4 ltr cans) which will put it to full on dipstick. Oil level is mid low to high with hot engine. Long life oil needed, I use Castrol. I've done oil changes on an annual basis, every second year with VW doing the others, no warranty issue when EGR pipe...

    204 oil consumption

Sounds OK. Despite what some might say engines use oil, especially new engines until the carbon layer builds up. Also, what was the level to start with? Long distance high speed travel will use more than short low speed. If the oil light came on I would suspect you need more than 0.5L to bring...

New engine needed - what should we think about?

I had an RX2, amazingly smooth, vibration free drive, comparable to an electric due to its inherently balanced design. But ultimately a failure because of high pollution levels, high fuel consumption and oil burning. Today no manufacturer will touch a rotary. BMW had a great idea with an...

What Type of engine oil for my camper ?

... or if you are able to tell us whereabouts you are, there may be a helpful club member nearby who maybe able to help? As others have said (this is for a quick check) - first, as now the engine may be cold, check the oil level with the dipstick. take it out. wipe it clean. dip it in. wait for...

    More oil chat!

Might be a silly question, but how do you know that your oil is diluted? If its the message about the oil level being too high, its probably either been topped up whilst the engine was cold or its a faulty sensor.

Increased Oil Consumption Problem (2010 T5 Cali 180 bhp)

I think it could be helpful to step aside from the specifics of this case for a moment, to create a better understanding of oil usage generally . Apologies in advance since I know that many/most will already know the following. On the subject of 'excessive oil consumption' in general there are...

    Residuals dropping

...being 2012 and until recently thought that the oil high all use and engine failure was on pre 2012 vans. We traded in without any high high oil use at + 60k on the clock. Just after trading in lots of chatter on forums re there being an issue with the EGR on t5 180 engines. In recent weeks I...

Just put a deposit on my ideal used Cali (2011 T5.1 140 DSG) except it's....

You use less oil on shorter runs and more on long distance high speed runs and by that I mean 100-400 miles at motorway speeds. Oil gets thinner as it heats, and is designed to do so to cope with the thermal expansion of engine components and some will be used. New engines, in particular...

Increased Oil Consumption Problem (2010 T5 Cali 180 bhp)

All very correct and hard to argue with, except you are ignoring the other data available : photos showing the worn bores and congested piston rings, the decayed internals of the egr cooler and the high Al and Si contents of all the analysis being ordered. I'm not claiming these as proof of...

    180 bhp oil consumption issue

My point about valve stem seals was to point out that if the high oil use engines had been fuelled with biodiesel then this was an additional potential cause of high oil usage. It was not to suggest it was the only one. Sorry if I caused you any confusion.

Oil Comsumption / Engine Problems with 2010/2011 Cali's

I also found sustained motorway driving resulted in high oil use on my old 180. I’ve always been a bit sceptical of EGR failure being the only cause, your oil degradation theory makes sense. However, since they hold about 7L changing the oil every 5000miles means you’re still using more than 1L...

Oil Comsumption / Engine Problems with 2010/2011 Cali's

WG as much as I admire your defence of the facts the poor guy has a shot engine that’s drinking oil, the semantics of the VW TPI are slightly irrelevant, the engine is still shot or at least needs some money spending to correct it, I think it’s great that you have not experienced any issues with...

    Buying older used California

No one is disputing that disintegration of the EGR causes the problem.. BUT what causes this disintegration when there are high milage 180's on the original EGR without high oil usage and normal Aluminium content. If it is purely the EGR responsible then all would be affected. Cause and effect...

    5.1 EGR thread

Interesting. Something I'm back thinking about at the moment. Will probably do the oil analysis and then make a decision. The route others seem to go down is an Tafmet EGR blank kit and DPF delete. Also interesting post on the VW T5.1 / T6 excessive oil use for CFCA 2.0 180hp engines. Facebook...

Oil Comsumption / Engine Problems with 2010/2011 Cali's

With respect WG, if VW cannot get an EGR to work correctly, without destroying the engine it's attached to, I would have zero faith in their ability to monitor various outputs, in order to make assumptions on the Long Life service regime. It's all utter faff on VWs part.

    Buying a 4motion

1L/20,000 miles. I know of NO modern engine that does not use some oil on a high speed long run. When the engine is upto temperature some oil vaporises and that is one of the reasons you have Crank Case ventilation where the Crank Case is ventilated into the Intake manifold in some way so any...

    Service interval confusion

Definitely Agree an Annual inspection is a must + Annual Oil Change. Fortunately for me I use mine most days + long and very long trips, 20,000 miles / year, but if I was doing less I would still be doing an Annual Oil Change no matter what the computer says. Very low mileage 5,000 miles or less...

    Adblue - refilling issues?

An summary from @MaxRed ’s link above...... The results of the study support a view that the practice of dosing diesel with 2-stroke oil is surprisingly ineffective in terms of lubricity and cetane improvements. Engine performance, fuel consumption and emissions were also unchanged; however the...
