Adblue refill

My Cali 150 DSG has the same mileage as yours, I’ve got a range of 3500 miles left and it’s never had a top up since new! Interesting how much they differ.

Has yours had the latest software update which means that the vehicle regens every 2 hours of use and I think the max range you get with a full Adblue tank is about 4,000 miles. I think it used to be 6,000 with a full tank before the last update.

No it hasn’t had the update as there were mixed reviews about it all so I opted out of having it updated at the time of service!
That would be why mine hasn’t used much, it’s a big difference I must say, how much Ad blue to the give you on the update?

I had a piece of paper with 9 boxes on it, one for each free refill. There's a thread on here about it and the conclusion, I think, was that as the AdBlue is pretty cheap best to have it rather than refuse it. There might be something else in the update as well that might be useful.

Edit: sorry it was 8 free refills not 9 as I wrote above.

Good afternoon,

Middle of last November the van got hits annual service. Software upgrades was not discussed in detail, and I admit I forgot to ask.

Is there a way that I can check which software version is installed and if this version uses more AdBlue?

I wouldn't be surprised that the software update is done in Germany and UK and customers given the free 8x refills and in Ireland they don't mentioned this at all (ever so often I read on the forum form VW recalls that never was mentioned on the VW Ireland webpage or by the dealer. So why is a van ((or a specific sequence of vans)) recalled in UK or Germany but not in Ireland?).

I agree AdBlue is not that expensive, but it is the convenience to let the VW dealer fill up the AdBlue. If something is wrong they can look after it.

Regards,
Eberhard

Here is a link to the thread about the software update and it was 8 top ups after you have had the update, not 9 as I wrote above.
VW Guru says when asked if you can refuse the update "Yes you can the dealer will ask you to fill in a form so that it can be processed as refused and the dealer does not get a missed workshop campaign action against them from vw which is costly to the dealer."

Thanks for the info much appreciated

Before the AdBlue fix I averaged 2231.8 mpg (39,961 Km and 51.7 litres).

My latest refill suggests a drop of nearly 1000 mpg at 1259.1 mpg.

I had my Cali delivered on 1st September and its done 4k and is showing 4k left on the adblue screen, now I have done a lot of motorway mileage so understand adblue usage will be more frugal but I have never noticed any regen either. My van was a stock item so not sure if it had been sat around for a while although it is a 2019 spec with the opening front roof canvas and wondered if it has missed the upgrade. On a similar point every time Audi get hold of my wife's car which is also diesel but without adblue they want to carry out a software update which I have always refused due to reviews on forums.

We live in London, but since July 2019 we have had a Skoda Citigo which is used locally. The Cali is used mostly for longer journeys.

If you haven't had the update a tank of Adblue should be good for ~8,000 miles. If you've had the update ~5,000 miles. I find it a little surprising how much AdBlue consumption has varied tank to tank.

Yes mine came from Liverpool as well. It will interesting to see what happens when I fill the adblue tank when it gets down to about 750 miles. Did you choose Liverpool on price?

yep, was going to order new but got a great deal on a new in stock Cali!

I will be filling mine when it shows 500 mile in the next couple of weeks.

We’ve had our van a year now, filled up when we got it and the adblue milage started climbing every time we used the van and now sitting at 6000, and hasn’t moved, done 3.5k miles, now concerned the adblue will go off as at this rate we’ll never use it any time soon And the shelf life is meant to be a year, so can you empty it out and refresh?

I had a slight overfill of AdBlue and syphoned out with a narrow tube. Pig p*ss doesn't taste too nice as I recall.

I also own a Skoda Karoq 1.6TDI in the manual it says this:

NOTICE Risk of damage to the system for the injection of AdBlue® in the exhaust system! ▶ Do not exceed the maximum refill quantity specif ied in the instrument cluster. ▶ The service life of AdBlue® is 4 years. If the tank contents are not consumed within this period, have them replaced by a specialist garage. For refilling, do not use any AdBlue® which has passed its expiry date.

You look like you have a problem, did you brim fill it. that can cause a failure in the Adblue level sensor.
If done 3.5K mls then should showing 2 to 2.5K left.

We had a little amber warning symbol come up on the dash on the way back from the Peak District last weekend. Looked in the manual but it was tricky to decipher the meaning other than it was to do with the AdBlue. Continued driving back and 85 miles from home a warning flashed up that we were under 500 miles AdBlue range and the engine would not restart! I little worrying so we turned of the stop start just in case and persevered. Got home - phew - and topped up with 10L that I had in the garage. Got 5000 mile range. All good but I could have done without the worry on the drive home.

When it gave me the first or second warning, I think with about 1000 MLS or so left, got a 10l can and put it in the boot. Returning from the lake District, near about Birmingham, it gave the warning about no start after switch off. Stopped at the next services and topped up. No tension. When it gives you a warning that early, it is easy to be prepared.

I have not used the California this year; the AdBlue in the tank is now older that its recommended lifespan. Should I be worried enough to take a syphon to the tank and get some fresh in?

Adblue has a 2 year lifespan, is it two years old?
