Anyone survived the shock news that their air conditioning compressor needs replaced - and it's not just a gas refill?

Local garage currently phoning suppliers but looks like dealer only and hefty .....

Ours was done on our current T6 at Breeze Southampton. However, as ours was a fault from manufacturing no cost. Think if I recall they had the van 2 days.

During our 4 month trip through Europe we had only 1 technical problem with our 26 year old T4 California, the compressor for the airconditiong failed. Meant no airco, but luckily taht didnt stop us. Had it replaced at a VW dealer when we got back. If I remember correctly it cost us around 500 euro's.

Thanks - long out of warranty, unfortunately!

Air conditioning has just failed on our 2015 T5. We've only done about 40000 miles so were a bit shocked to hear that we'd need a new compressor-at a cost of £1000! Does this seem unreasonable-ether the failure or the price?

Probably just a dried up seal somewhere costing 50p but VW obvs just change the whole unit.
Use the next one more often. :cheers

That's what I was originally quoted but local garage sourced a good quality alternative and going in tomorrow to hopefully be resolved.

Go to a local Aircon specialist who can repair the compressor or replace it for much less.

Mine went a few months ago 2014 - 80,000 miles, quoted 1100 from VW.
Took it a local air con specialist who’s said they can replace a couple of parts for approx 200 or new compressor 650.

Spoke with VW mechanic who said they will never just replace the odd part just swap the whole unit, this helps longer term of a warranty issue.
I’m waiting now to see if VW are willing to haggle a bit, advantage with VW it’s two year warranty, local garage only 12 months, the cali is a forever truck for me .

Only using the AirCon occasionally can cause issues with seals drying out as Sidepod has indicated.

Ours stays on all year round, just varying the temperatures to suit.
