Hello everyone,
We just bought a T5 California (year 2015), and have a little misunderstanding.

From the control panel, the aux heater icon is blinking and cannot be activated. I suspect the batteries or the child security. Did you ever encountered this problem?

(We are in travel without our van, we have only the VW manual)

Thank you very much,
Valentin

The blinking light indicates a malfunction.
Not too sure but it requires the leisure batteries to be above ~11.5-12V AND more than 1/4 full of diesel in the tank to operate...

This has happened to me on a T6. I reset the camper control unit and all was well. It's never happened again since.

Thank you for your fast answer!
The tank was full but the leisure batteries was ~10%.

I charged them all the night (~7h) and were at 80% in the morning, but the icon did not stop blinking. Perhaps I need to turn the engine on and drive a bit to disarm the security. Or perhaps the batteries are too old (almost 5 years).

I saw AGM batteries 100A/h at 250€ each (we live in France). Do I need other caracteristics to make a choice?

@Sotton Campers, thank you! How to reset the control unit? Is it indicated in the manual?

Press the L hand bottom button. This switches OFF the panel. Wait 30 secs and switch on using same button. This restarts the Control Panel.

Holding the Bottom R Button and pressing the Knob for a few seconds puts you into the hidden menu. This includes a Diagnostic setting which shows if there are any Fault Codes. These can be Reset and cleared.

Thanks that's very helpful!

For those of you who don't know, if you ever get any problems with roof stuck or any other error say with the heater or fridge, you are able to access the hidden menu in your control panel as used by the VW Engineers.
Access as follows:

1. Hold down the centre of the rotary button together with the menu button (button below with the squares on it)
2. You will get the hidden menu.
3. Rotate the rotary button to get to "VW diagnose" and select this by pressing on the centre of the rotary button.
4. If no errors are present it will display "no errors"
5. If Errors are present then a list of errors will appear
6. Press the centre of the rotary button again to delete all the errors
7. Repeat process above just to check that errors have dissapeared!
8. Re-configure the time and date if neccesary.

Any problems should be resolved assuming these are Electronic and not Mechanical.

WelshGas - as ever, thank you for your advice. We're currently on a rainy and cold ( yes in August!) campsite in Cornwall. The heater icon was flashing and the heater wasn't functioning. Following your instructions above, even though no "no errors" came up, the icon stopped flashing and the heating is working. Marvellous!

Heck! I've just discovered that I asked the forum the same question in 2017!

This is a great piece of information. In the midst of a trip through the Outer Hebrides.... Had the Alternator replaced earlier today (different story...but Waterside Motors near Balivanich we're brilliant!!). Got to our campsite tonight after a wild wet and windy day ...only to find Heater light flashing. Using the "reset" tip above for Bottom Right button cleared the issue ....and glorious heat once more warming us up.
