I refuse to spend £400 on a matress that I'll only sleep on for a small proportion of the year, so I thought I would try budget options.

I ended up getting:

a cheap memory foam topper in 120x190x5 for £37.99: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00LTQ4DJI/?tag=eliteelect-21
with another cheap topper over that for £44.99 (may cool down the memory foam a bit): https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B013TVZDXK/?tag=eliteelect-21
and have put them inside an old single duvet cover.

Downside is it is pretty bulky, but it is remarkably comfy for £82.98!!

Hello Stephen,

I see where you coming from. We bought a demo model at the time, which came with the original VW mattress.

I normally sleep downstairs and this mattress is killing my back. It is very unkomfortable. I bought a air mattress which helped, but annoys me a bit that when I setup the bed I have to fold out the mattress and then the air mattress.

I had a look, it seems that it is possible to take the foam out (I assume for washing the material). I found a company in the Dublin area that offers memory foam sheets. As soon as we are allowed to leave the house again I will give them a ring and see if they will work with me to replace the original VW foam with something softer, more back friendly.

The cost of their memory foam is actually not that high. I assume to replace the 3x parts will cost me just EUR 60.00 (so why is the original so expensive?). What I hope is that they help me to cut the new memory foam sheets in the exact sizes for me. I am sure they can do that better than I.

Happy soft California,
Eberhard

My van came with the comfort mattress from the dealer but, as a side sleeper, it was just too firm for me and I was getting hip pain. I bought the Ikea 4ft topper above and also protected it in a single duvet, following advice on the forum.

I've actually found the topper has worked really well and I make it up in to a 'bed roll'. The fitted sheet goes on the topper with the duvet and pillows laid out on top. In the morning, I then roll the whole thing up and in to the boot area and fold up the comfort mattress to the vertical position, behind the seats. At bed time, the seats are down, comfort mattress flicked out and bed unrolled in less than a minute.

It also has the advantage that if we arrive at site late or it's chucking it down, my bed is made and I don't need to exit the van to get in to bed.

When we don't want the bed roll in place, it fits in to a waterproof storage bag and carried in to the house to keep it protected.
