The saga of the roof.

We went away in the summer along with the temperamental roof. It would go up and down but in a stop start manner after a little wiggling of the control unit button. The motor works fine - (when it works, if you see what I mean.)

As we were in Germany, I went to a VW dealership who, using the diagnostic, explained that it was not an electrical fault.

With that, we opened the roof and had a good look around for an obvious mechanical fault. We found one nut had burst through its housing along the bottom of the raising mechanism so fixed that but with no improvement to performance.

For the rest of the holiday it performed intermittently then stopped altogether. It won’t go up at all now. The diagnostic process on the CCU says error 1000 but does not clear when I hold the escape button for 5 seconds.

My question - Is there a way of getting the roof up? Or is it a job for the VW specialists removing interior panels etc and knowing how to properly refit them?

Thanks as always.

Paul

PS

As for the issue of decent VW habitation servicing. I considered going to a T5 conversion expert but the possibility of them removing and replacing interior bits and it rattling for ever put me off.

So next week I’m off to Grange over Sands to Haddens. I phoned around a few dealers and spoke to their ‘expert’ technician to determine their understanding and/or experience of roof matters. Dan at Haddens won the job. We get a courtesy car and can go off for a day of Lakeland walking while Dan works it out.

Update next week.

Maybe oil level?

Make sure you stop at hest bank on the way up to grange over sands for a coffee and great veiw of the bay at this time of year :thumb

If wiggeling the turning knob has effect on the opening of the roof your button most likely is starting to wear or is broken

Thanks. Very possible given the nature of the slow decline from warning bonging to stop start movement to total failure, over several weeks.

For a while it would work after wiggling and jiggling the button as if struggling to achieve a contact. Is this common?

The turning knob on the controlpanel known is to fail in time and also to break when hitting your head while climbing out the frontseats to the rear

Thanks. Will do. We plan to travel the whole lancs coast road to find quick overnight getaways. Is there anywhere to stop over at Hest Bank?

Hmm. Unsure of stopovers as I only live an hour away and frequent that area quite often. You arnt that far from the lakes tbh, or morecambe....unsure if you would be happy with that though!!

Just a thought re CCU button

If that has failed, why does it work for everything else, fridge, heater etc?

Maybe not Morecambe!

Code 1000 is roof info short to ground in layman’s terms this means the position sensors in the roof rams have failed and don’t know the position of the roof they have more than likely cracked and let moisture in over a period of time you will need new sensors they are not separate and you would require a whole new roof loom. The sensors can then be cut off the new loom and conected with shrink connectors to the old loom to save taking all of the roof apart and causing damage. To get the roof up you need to access the hydraulic motor power plug behind the roof control modul and glasses holder and directly power the motor up.

Blimey, you're a useful chap to have on this forum. :thumb

Are the sensors generic or do they have to come from VW - thinking a general hydraulics engineering/maintenance (convertible roof specialist?) firm that deals with this sort of thing day in, day out would be able to sort it all both quicker/easier?

As far as I know it’s vw only as it’s part of the roof loom.

A reasonable stopover is the caravan club (or whatever it's called these days) near Grange.

Wrong topic?
You need to scroll further back up the thread, it went off on a tangent but it does make sense.
Would help if they quoted the post they were responding to!

Brilliant. Thanks.I’ll show this to the chap at the garage on Wednesday because he was talking about replacing wiring loom as being a very long and tricky piece of work. And expensive.

Are we saying we just use the sensors from the new loom as a fix and disregard the rest of it to avoid pulling the whole lot out?

Yes exactly that you can join then with heat shrink connectors and it’s as good as nw without disturbing the roof lining or any other water tight sealant around the front roof drains.

Which ought to keep time and labour costs down a bit. How much are roof looms?

Hi - we are having the same problem and interested in how it was resolved! (and at what cost!) was Hadwins able to do the job? thanks
