Hi all,
Last Sunday ( 20th Sept 20) was our Ruby wedding anniversary ( 40th) and our first trip since lock-down to a C&CC campsite outside Kidderminster.
We had been a bit too early to check in so went 'around the block ' near there for a look at the area then just before 1pm we joined a line of 7 cars in the dedicated right turn lane to climb the hill to the campsite. When it was our turn to cross the white line (with the green arrow still illuminated I must point out) I drove into the cross roads and as I straightened the van to climb the hill our beloved Cali was shaken with a massive impact. In the immediate shock I thought I may have collided with a bollard or something in the road but my wife shouted out that we had been hit by a white car.
Fortunately we were uninjured and immediately got out of the Cali to see the damage - shockingly bad - and to see what had actually hit us. At this point other motorists are checking if we are okay - whilst others are squeezing their cars around us on the damaged passenger side.
The driver of the Nissan that collided with us is trying to start his car with air bags inflated ! I'm thinking is this a stolen car and is he trying to get away? People around us think he is moving the car out of the way but he drives a fair distance down the road until the Nissan gives in and stops dead with me chasing it and taking pictures on my phone. To cut a long story short the police did attend when my wife rang as she explained we were causing a hazard at a busy junction and there was a fair bit of debris on the road, she also asked for an ambulance for the other driver as now that he had exited the car we could see he was an older chap who looked very dazed and shaken.

One motorist did give his name and phone number as he said he witnessed the whole thing and also thankfully I had the dash cam on so all the evidence was clear, the Nissan had driven through the red light at the junction at what we think may have been 40 + mph and didn't appear to have braked even at the last minute.

After phone calls to our insurance and debate around how quickly we could actually get our vehicle moved out of the way our Cali was transported to a compound used by the local police while we were transported by a very helpful police officer in the back of his patrol car to the nearest Travelodge.

The Cali I hope is now out of the Police compound and on its way to Sutton in Ashfield to a Motorhome specialist repairers ( a conversation with repairer confirmed that he has dealt with a few Cali's and knows the vehicle well ! ) I will provide an update on how we get on with the repairs.

However one of the biggest shocks we had on getting into the back of the Cali to gather a few overnight things was that the glass EXPLODED off the Cooker/sink unit as far as the sliding door and into the front seats, and even ending up in the cutlery drawer! if our Cali is not written off we will cover the glass tops with maybe Fablon or some other plastic see through cover, would not like to think what would have happened if we had passengers in the rear seat !

The good news in all this - the bottle of champagne that we were given for our anniversary had survived in the fridge, sadly we just don't feel much like drinking it at the moment.

Good you both had no injury but a very sad result for your Cali.
That looks expencive to repair imo.

Oh what a dreadful experience!

I hope you are both ok.... some reactions can be quite delayed so please take good care of yourselves!

I’m glad you are all OK.
I would be very surprised if that damage was not a right off from an Insurance point of view.
It seems to involve both external and internal panels, kitchen, waste tank, possibly the fresh water tank etc: and I wouldn’t be at all surprised if the floor pan/chassis was damaged on that side.
Make sure the vehicle is properly checked out, especially if Insurance accept it for repair.

that is a terrible incident. Glad that you guys are safe and the situation seems to have been dealt with well.

Hope all things work out well. These are situations were dash cam footage can come in handy ... especially when the other party decide to act smart ...

Thank you for sharing your unfortunate accident with us really pleased to hear you are both uninjured. As for your lovely Cali its very sad to see lets hope your insurance covers you for most of the costs

So sorry to read this. I hope you are both recovering well from the ordeal.
Please keep us posted with the claim from your insurers.
I sincerely hope you feel like opening the champagne for all the right reasons in the not too distant future.

You poor things that must have been terrifying. Hopefully you have recovered from the shock a bit and are taking some comfort in the fact neither of you were injured, that could have been much, much worse being hit on the side like that.

I hope all goes well with the insurance claim and you're back on the road asap.

At least you are safe.
the amount of internal damage on top of external damage would make me feel if it was me to hope it is written off.

Glad your both alright, unfortunately your Cali looks to have come off worse. I'm not sure I would want that back but hope it's repairable if that's what you want.

Glad you are OK I had an identical exactly 1 year ago in our MoHo, I double decker bus didn’t like his side of the road so he swerved and hit us head on!
Hope things get sorted for you quickly, and cheers for the heads up about the glass top very thoughtful of you.

Looks like a write off to me.

What a dreadful experience! Glad there were no injuries and I hope your van is sorted quickly.

Unfortunately it seems to be a common occurrence, this close shave is what we witnessed last week.

What made it worse was that it was our son in front of us who nearly got hit.

Good evening,

That was a terrible experience. Good that you were not injured during this accident. Hopefully you are still feeling well, because I also believe something like this could hit one a few hours later.

Thank you for sharing the information. Good to read that you had a dashcam and witnesses to prove that you are not responsible for the incident. I also believe that the camper is (almost) a write off. Hopefully you get everything properly sorted with the insurance company.

Best of luck to you and I wish for you that the further paperwork is going well.

Regards,
Eberhard

Thank you all for your good wishes. We are still a little in shock but have to accept the fact that today we have been told that the Cali is beyond economical repair. Have declared it SORN as a first step to recovering some costs and await a valuation from insurer. Has anyone had any experience of insurance valuations for our vehicles? We have been looking at those that are currently on the market of a similar age and spec (not many) and Parkers guide appears out of date.
Any suggestions much appreciated.

Put the details of your van into We Buy Any Car . Com and you will get a figure to start with. We sold our 2014 Cali to them a couple of years ago and got more than the dealer had offered in PX. Good luck

Really sorry you’re both having to go through all the hassle but as others have said, at least you weren’t hurt.
If your insurance company does write the vehicle off and if you can be bothered, you may be able to buy it back at a nominal cost and break it for spares and make some money? (The insurer may well put it on the Copart auction site though).

I'd start gathering screenshots of ads on here and ebay / autotrader. Note when they are published and when they are marked sold. Generate a large folder of info. If they try to base it on CAP or Parkers etc, or base it on average residual curves, you are doomed, so you need to be able to demonstrate what the market really looks like.
You can just take what they offer, but unless your time is VERY expensive, your efforts could be very worthwhile.

Very, very sorry to hear this. We had a similar accident 5 years ago. My number one learning from that was do not let your insurance company palm you off to an accident management company.

Sorry if I have missed this in another post but has the other driver admitted it is their fault?

The suggestion about collecting valuations from here is great. Given the present demand for Californias, and hence high prices, that needs to be factored in. Prices are silly at the moment.

There are lots of people here to help during what is a terrible time. (However, congratulations on your Ruby wedding anniversary.)

Thinking on, someone recently posted a load of collected data on recent asking prices (here and on the Facebook page). Someone may have a link / better memory of the user name.

For some reason the parkers guides etc have no basis in reality for the Cali - I think the basic rule is not to accept an offer if you cannot find a local replacement similar vehicle in a similar condition. But for that you need to do a hell of a lot of the legwork and argue the toss and argue the toss - all whilst being without a vehicle.

I wish you luck - I went through it once (not with the Cali) and it was a tough experience. And don't expect a penny for your time or inconvenience - only documented cash spent will be refunded , if you are lucky. Also, do not let them keep the vehicle before you have emptied it of every possible content or enhancement as even if you can prove it was yours you will never get it back nor any compensation for its loss.

Thankyou, just got a quote, gave me a rough idea of it's value
