I long suspected but confirmed today that my engine heating Webasto heater is firing up in temperatures well above the usual 4c we mention. 9c today and caught it doing its stuff.
Has anyone had a similar issue or can point to what might be faulty?
My guess is it has a temperature sender input that tells it to boot up, and another to tell it to shut down once the coolant reaches x degrees. That one seems to work as planned.
 
As long as it shuts down at the right temperature, sounds like a fault that makes it work better than the original design! I turn mine on manually to do the same thing. Warms up the engine faster at moderately cold temperatures, less engine wear, lower emissions...

How do you turn it on manually?

I believe it comes on a 5c or below.
How are you measuring the ambient temperature. MFD?
 
I have the OEM factory programable upgrade installed from new. Forum members have said in UK it is only available on Beach, not Ocean, but there is an aftermarket Polish upgrade available that some have installed.

Yep. It seems to be about right (ie consistent with the temperatures predicted). It is a safe bet that the Webasto takes its input from the mfd?

I would have thought so. I would prefer to have the Webasto trigger somewhere between 5 &10c but maybe 5c was chosen so that it would run for a reasonable time before reaching the target Coolant temperature.
 
I'm wondering now if my webasto coolent heater is now running permanently (while the engine runs).... and that it is not combusting or exhaust-ing well.... and might be the cause of the fumes I'm getting in the cab. (exhaust manifold and all gaskets changed and everything else cleared by very competent vw specialists).

Does anyone know how the coolant heater can be completely isolated (fuse or easy to access connections) so I can validate this theory?

Apparently they are well hidden under 'trays' that are a pain to remove... Including taking the exhaust off. Cheers
 
Does anybody know if the temperature that this thing kicks in at can be altered via VCDS or he like to come on at say 7oc and below?
finding it’s not often below 5 when I use it.

No! Mine was running far too much. I've isolated mine by removing the fuse #29 in the lowest row behind my water bottle holder (Mine's left hand drive so has the T6 style water bottle).
It's not resolved my fume problems, but running the van with the Webasto isolated has allowed me to compare how it warms without it... It does take longer but doesn't take for ever. Also, the radiator fan doesn't need to run.... It was bonkers to see the Webasto was heating the engine up while the radiator fan was cooling things down!

Ok. That’s strange. Unsure if you have an issue there with your fan and/or water temp sensor. It shouldn’t be on at all really. The only times I’ve ever heard mine on are either when it’s red hot and the air con is on or if it’s doing a regen.
You might find that with the fan being on it’s blowing the fumes back toward the cab air intake??
