I am looking for some help on understanding VIN for Californias (ideally an Ocean). the first 3 characters refer to W (Germany) V (VW) and 1 or 2 which both apply to commercial vehicles. Can I ask some T6 Ocean owners to comment on their first 3 characters?

The next 6 characters are the vehicle type, so I would expect to see ZZZ7HZ to designate a California.

Will help with a bit of detective work on a van that is advertised as something it is not...

Mines a 2019 T6 Ocean. Using the vindecoderz web site it tells me its a T5 Minivan.
WV2 are my first three characters.
Very odd!

i have access to the vw parts database

The full specification as constructed is on the big sticker inside the service book and fixed either under the dash or on the seat base. The codes are known as PR codes.
Decode it via this website, works for all modern VW models. Or individual PR codes on this site.

If you want a list of them all try here.

If you are an owner of an earlier VW Transporter you can decode the build here.

Calikev, my new Ocean is ready for collection on Monday. I have the VIN and wanted to check the build specification before I collect the vehicle on Monday…. If I send you the VIN could you email me the build specification? (I have to confess that I don’t know how to send you a private message ). Gerry

Hi,

Here's the decoding list for the VIN number (chassis number).

Have fun...

Regards from Amsterdam,

Marc.

====================================

Decode VIN of Volkswagen and Audi models:

Example VIN:
WV2 ZZZ 7H Z 9H 091234

WV2 Manufacturer: Volkswagen commercial vehicles (T4, T5, LT, no trucks)

ZZZ filler fields

7H car model: Transporter, Multivan

Z filler field

9 build year: 2009

H factory: Hanover

09 1234 car identification number; 1234: report code for insurance.

The 17-digit chassis number is the VIN (vehicle identification number).

The digits 1, 2 and 3 of the chassis number identify the WMI (World Manufacturer Identifier).

WAU = Audi
WUA = Audi
TRU = Audi (assembly of the TT in Hungary)
WVW = Volkswagen
WV1 = Volkswagen commercial vehicles (trucks)
WV2 = Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles (T4, T5, LT)
WV3 = Volkswagen
WV5 = Volkswagen
WVG = Volkswagen Touran
1VW = Volkswagen of America / Truck Models
1V1 = Volkswagen of America / pickup models

The digits 4, 5 and 6 of the chassis number are filler characters (ZZZ) without meaning.

EXAMPLE: WVWZZZ 1J ZXW000001
The 7th and 8th digits of the chassis number identify the vehicle type

EXAMPLE: WVWZZZ1JZXW000001
The 9th digit of the chassis number is again a filler character without meaning

EXAMPLE: WVWZZZ1JZXW000001
The 10th digit of the chassis number indicates the model year

EXAMPLE: WVWZZZ1JZXW000001

8 = 2008 or 1978 or 1968

@Osian go into your VW dealer's trade parts counter and ask them for a Car Data Print of your VIN, that will give you the complete listing of the vehicle. Many parts staff will oblige with this.
