I've got this in my much older Cali... Which are prone to exhaust manifold problems. I've changed the manifold and all the turbo and EGR areas have been checked.
Attention is now turning to the webasto engine water heater. When the glow plugs start to fail they give poor combustion and smoke. It's under the front passenger seat (rhd vehicles) and the fumes can drift straight up, through the door seals and as well as getting sucked into the vents.
Mine isn't turning off even when I've been on the motorway, so I perhaps have extra trouble. The fumes are super smelly from these heaters... Where (well combusted) exhaust gases from the engine are less smelly but equally dangerous.
I'm hoping to find a plug or fuse with which I can simply isolate the webasto and see if the fumes go away.
If your fumes have arrived since temperatures have dropped, it could be worth a look.
