Is it compulsory to put your dog in a cage/crate (in the vehicle) when crossing Dover to calais/dunkirk?

We have done in the past, but the crate is redundant the rest of the holiday.

I crossed with DFDS, Dover-Dunkirk return over Easter, and the dog was just left in the Cali un-caged.... Planning another trip next week, same route, and expect the same arrangement.
