Was wondering if anyone had any info on when the next facelift might happen, or even when the new model T6 will be launched?

From what I can find online, seems the T6 could be late 2016 or even 2017

We're getting ready to buy a new Cali SE and was hoping to make sure we don't have our info wrong and order when something new is about to be launched, especially a model with better emissions/engines!

I thought it was supposed to be out next year?

The info I am getting from my local dealer is:

Re the new T6, my understanding is this is being introduced next year but we don’t know when.

However what I do know is the new Euro 6 emission standard start 1st January 2015 and all vehicle registered after that date will have the new engines, with a high emphasis on reducing Nitrox Oxide.

Based on the fact there's a 5 month wait on new orders, I think we might hold off ordering a new Cali SE until there is some solid info, especially regarding new engines.

I've also written to VW but don't anticipate getting any info from them on this yet... will post back if I do!

If order time is 5 months you should get the new engine. Think the beach could get a 136ps 6 speed as base engine and 140ps could move to 163ps

The Panel van is out in October, not sure on the Cali - This information came straight from VW UK

Thanks @Oli!

Here's the response from VW, no surprises here I guess!

Thank you for your recent contact in relation to the release of the Transporter T6.

I am delighted to learn that you are interested in T6 Transporter. I can confirm we have not received any information regarding the release of this model as of yet, so I am unable to confirm anything for you. I would recommend visiting the news section on the Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles UK website via the link below. This is the most up to date source for information, including prices, specification and news on all of our future models:

Thank you for contacting Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles UK.

October 2014 or 2015?

What are the changes to the motor?
They may not all be good.

I have a fiat panda and from what I've read fiat have made what was a lovely 1.2 petrol engine barely driveable at low revs getting it euro 6 compliant.

Probably same engines with "Ad Blue" addition.

New Transporter may not spawn new Cali. What I can tell you from looking at next gen VW's is that will be some interesting new toys. Expect to see the death of the old 510 sat nav and 310 stereo systems and the introduction of the new CMS radios which even in basic form are colour and tough sensitive. There's also the possibility of mirrorlink which would be interesting. All this is already on the new Golf and Polo and it will be on the new Passat. Also expect safety assist systems, city breaking, lane assist, high beam assist etc. Engines will have to borrow from the new Euro 6 engines on the Golf. Would be interesting to see the amazing 1.4 ACT petrol engine.

In the sense that they would continue producing the T5 Cali along side the T6 transporter?

It depends if they produce this much talked about microbus. It's an ongoing rumour for years. There's a big US market to tap into, so perhaps some kind of retro microbus and a T6 Cali. I understand that Skoda are going to continue selling the T5 Velles under a Skoda badge, and as a big people mover, can't see them coming to the UK though. There is going to be an ever increasing number of diversifying and niche vehicle, just look at the new Golf.

For no particulars reason, I've always wondered if this will be the last Cali but that is just a feeling.

I hope if they do make a T6 Cali they properly set it up for RHD

VW have a new 2l diesel coming soon which will be fitted to the new Passat as an option.
Biturbo, 256 bhp, Euro 6 compliant so I guess if the Cali continues this may eventually find its way into it.
Also, the new Passat will have some alloy panels, said to have a "new bonding connection process to eliminate corrosion" Good luck with that :smile :smile

Think petrol and hybrid - there's no reason why 150bhp 1.4 Active Cylinder Technology used by VW and Audi couldn't go in the T6.

There will almost certainly be a plug hybrid version.

I'd think less diesel, more alternate sources of combustion.

That said VW already have some lesser powered diesels at Euro 6

I did read somewhere that the Cali maybe ending as Volkswagen have reformed links with Westfalia. We could see the t6 Cali rebranded as a t6 Westfalia...???

I doubt VW would want to go down in the house route agin, it's just not cost effective and they need to be cost effective, in reality, how much difference does it make if it is in house, sure there's a touch of kudos but Mercedes sells the Marco Polo's through their dealers so it amounts to the same thing.

The in-house idea was a lovely notion back in the early 2000's but the car world has changed significantly and it's harder then ever to turn a profit.

If there was a T6 Westy - and it was sold through VW Dealers with a vW warranty - would anyone go, I'm not buying one of those, it's not made in a VW factory.... Unlikely, surely? You could argue that a professional company providing the camping bits and bobs could be better.

And where is the Beach in all this, there has to be a T6 Beach of some sort, it's a multivan with a pop top added, but who knows?

It could only be a good thing if build was moved outside Volkswagen to a Specialist such as Westfalia.
With you on the Beach model james. Volkswagen really need to carry this forward into the next era. It's a gem of a vehicle...!!!

Exactly - i think most people would be glad if the build was moved to a specialist company.

Multivans have always been part of the Transporter, going back to the Micorbuses of the T2 etc.

Agree about the Beach :)

Not us, We have had a Westy and the interior isnt that good compared to our Cali, they are conversions....that says it all to me. We are more than happy with our Cali interior, its modern, manufactured out of lightweight ali and very stylish in looks. It doesnt look like a caravan. :D

Who ever builds it let's hope they don't use aluminium in the roof!

The T4 Westfalia was still branded as a California albeit with a Westfalia transfer on the front of the roof. It wasn't as slick as the T5 in terms of materials but it was a lot better built. Westfalia have been building Campers forever and they know their craft. having owned both T4 and T5 Californias I can assure you that most of the T5 California is a knock off from the T4 Westfalia California. The myriad problems with the T5 have generally been where VW introduced their own innovations. Personally I'd much prefer to see Westfalia build them.

On a side note, if you pass near Westphalia in Germany it's well worth visiting the workshop as they have a great museum there with some wonderful old vehicles chronicling the development of the modern camper van from its earliest days. It's behind the reception and it's free.

What is that engine called?

I'm very anti small diesels at the moment - the less emissions, the more there is to go wrong.
I'd rather have a petrol, use a bit more fuel but spend a lot less time getting the damn thing fixed.

We don't get enough choice here with the Cali - they come in all sorts of variants, many more basic than our range. I think we should get the whole lot.

My EGR fault is currently being investigated… :headbang

A big plug-in hybrid would be nice using the Golf GTE technology but with more battery capacity (given the greater weight of the vehicle this would make sense). The driving batteries could even double as leisure batteries. Charge up at the camping ground with say, a 150km range to get to the next one or do some local touring. On a long run it wouldn't be far behind the diesel in economy. As a daily driver it would beat the diesel hands down. Small runs soot up the DPF, aren't good for the engine and are not particularly economical in a diesel.

A hybrid could also get the Cali into the US whereas a diesel may never get there.

I thought the Westfalia museum had closed and the vehicles sold, around 2009? I would love to visit it if it is still open - have you visited it recently?

Edit: found this. Looks like they're trying to get the band back together:

I went there around 2006 from memory so things may have changed. I do have photos of all the old buses and early caravans.
