Hi Admins

For info - I have been receiving threatening emails from hackers saying they have infected my computer and I need to give them some bitcoin or there will be horrible consequences.... The evidence they have is the email address and password I used on this site. It might be timely to remind your members to use unique passwords and reset them regularly and report email scams to the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau!

Hope no one else was affected by this.

Using uniques passwords is sound advise, in fact, its a good idea to use a password manager like LastPass.

These chancers are just using lists of email addresses, it unlikely then have the password for this forum unless you have used the same password on multiple sites and one of those has been compromised it's purely a fly fishing exercise.
Just ignore these types of email.

Also, you can put your email address into this site, https://haveibeenpwned.com/ and it may be able to tell you which list your address is on and where it was obtained from.

Those scam emails are very common I get them all of the time. Most of the emails have an old password, so changing them regularly and ensuring wherever possible you use two factor authentication is a must.

Very common. They have managed to hack a mail account on mine. I'm unable to change the password as it's linked to another account which I can't remember the password for and I cant pass data protection (because they have deleted my records).

Going forward my suggestion would be complex passwords. My password in hindsight was too easy.

Apparently they have gained control of my web camera and have interesting footage of me as I visit certain adult sites which they will send to all contacts in my address book unless I cough up some dosh.

Should I pay, or is the fact that I have no web camera significant?

Same for me @Amarillo. I know it’s a scam and baseless threats but still unnerving to have an email listing both email address and password

Also had hundreds of those mails amarillo.
Changed a lot of my passwords & ignore them. If they send enough emails out they will eventually get paid by someone.

They've never had a genuine password from me - only my own spoofer's password.

Can't you read the " From " email address?.

I can see that on Apple Mail Nd they often end in .ro, .po and various other eastern european and sub-saharan countries internet addresses.

Yes, I can read the from address and I used it to report the account. It was just a string of numbers.com

My friend had that and she said if they wanted to send pictures of a middle aged woman in her dressing gown drinking tea to her six friends in her address book then so be it. She was more offended they thought she only had 6 friends than for calling her out for allegedly looking at porn

Some have had some serious plastic surgery.
I'd pay them not to get this open for public.
