I picked up a Genuine Sportline Spoiler in Factory Relex Silver today and was going to fit it this weekend.

The guy I got it from said that he didn't bother with the adhesive binding as the fit is good anyway and he just bolted it on. He said he did that so that if it ever got damaged it was easier to repair then damaging the whole bumper taking the spoiler off? Good advise or do I just do it fit as per instructions with adhesive.

ps does anyone know what adhesive I would need if I go that route?

Never heard of bolting them on.stilkoflex is the bonding adhesive you will need :thumb

It came with a proper fitting kit.

There are quite a few Silkoflex do you know which number?

I've seen many of these fitted badly and I've been told they are hard to fit because they have to match the shape of the bumper

My understanding is that for this reason they had to be bonded on and that it could take time. I thought there was some kind of heating process as well????

Could be wrong though. in general when someone who is into VW's sells me something to do with VW's - they always tell me it is easy to fit/repair/add - experience of VW owning has led me to believe that this is nearly always wrong.

As i said, I've seen many that on inspection have gaps.

Guys this is a genuine VW which was painted and prepped in factory, not a Fibre glass copy one, the copy ones need completely bonding as they don't have the fitting kits, the genuine one has a fitting kit and three foam strips that bond on above

I'll take some pics

i honestly don't know - so if you're confident - give it a go and let us know how you get on.

I was led to be believe the fitting was quite difficult.

Put up some pics :) :)

They look pretty awesome

I would go with the instructions you were given :thumb

Grills are seperate, think the copy ones are all in one, the fog light holes have caps in them which pop in out depending on whether you have fogs

Genuine Sportline Front Spoiler & tow eye

I picked up my new 180SE fitted with VW front spoiler on 7 March 14, I was advised the spoiler was not bonded at all only fixing screws are used. The method of attachment is not why I write. I was trying out all the bits and pieces needed in a breakdown such as the tow eye, only to find that that factory tow eye supplied in the tool kit is too short due to the spoiler. Better still VW do not supply one that does fit. My local VW supplier was very helpful, they gave me an old tow eye and I used this to have my standard one extended by 50 mm, so it now fits, they also covered the cost of the welding work.

If you have a front spoiler fitted I'd suggest you get your tow eye extended by 50 mm so in the unlikely event of a breakdown it will fit when you need it.

Hi,

Can I ask where it was that you got the spoiler from and did it turn out to be easy to install, it looks great!

Since my last post on this subject my VW has been back to my VW supplier re a problem with the front sensors which was related to the spoiler. When first I picked up my cali (with the VW spoiler fitted) in Feb 14 I noticed it was not quite as firm as I would have expected, a man from the body shop was called and tried to tighten things up.

On a recent trip I found the front sensors were indicating something in close proximity whenever the sensors were active, it was the spoiler on the move, it had 2 - 3 mm vertical movement, not slack but it moved.

The dealer checked the VW instructions for the spoiler and found the bodyshop should have bonded and screw fixed the spoiler.

Font spoiler is now firmly fitted as it should have been first time round.

Would certainly recommend bonding the spoiler on as well. All the ones we have fitted are bonded one. A body shop would be able to remove and refit if necessary without damage to the bumper or spoiler.

cheers

Thanks Alex, that's exactly what they have now done, removed and refitted correctly.

hi can you please take better pictures for fitting instructions im gonna fit my spoiler and I dont have a instruction if you have a pdf file that will work to....

I have seen the vw instructions but do not have a copy, sorry.

can you sen me clear pictures of instructions i wanna read those the words but its so blur it will be a big help

I'm waiting on a reply with reference to the same front splitter :(
All along the top edge where it meets the standard bodywork the paint has chipped/rubbed off due to movement and I have the same problem with the parking sensors!

I'm not holding out a lot of hope so will end up sorting it myself, do any of you guys remember where the bonding was applied (are they large sticky pads)?

The bonding isn't included when you buy the spoiler and its basically a tube of adhesive in a caulking gun. Most people use Silkaflex or Tigerseal

I recall there is a vw instruction on fitting that includes the bonding, only saw a paper copy maybe someone has one on this forum?
