Had a Gas safety check today, the first since I got the van a year ago. I understood it had been serviced just prior to purchase, but I now doubt that.

Turns out gas pipe (pig tail) expired in 2016, the Gas regulator leaked AND the gas valve leaked slightly (the bit that goes into the bottle). This meant I had a small leak even when the gas was turned off at the bottle.

So, feel like it was £77 inc parts well spent, and would encourage anyone to do the same.

A Vehicle Service does NOT include anything to do with the Habitation equipment - Gas system included.
It is upto the Owner and the Red Rubber pipe + Seals should be changed at least every 5 years, I believe.

I know, but I wasn't clear. When I said I believed 'it' was serviced prior to purchase, I meant gas serviced (ie safety check).

It was at least a year out of date when I purchase it, if not longer. Main reason for the post was to encourage others not to leave it too long......as the new owner I relied on wrong information, but I should be responsible for my own safety.

I don't suppose CCN fancy opening a dealership in the UK! From your posts they sound brilliant.

Interested where you got the service done ?

Best place would be a Caravan or Motorhome Dealer. NOT VW.

Yes. Motor home dealer in Hitchin, walking distance from where I live.

They also do motor servicing, and I’m thinking of using them for that too. £120 for basic oil/filter change or £240 for full service. As they sell VW converters, I guess they know the engines welll, and hope they treat Calin ok.

That’s the weird thing about Cali ownership....you really become very particular about who is allowed to touch their most intimate parts....

Anybody know where I can get a gas service carried out in North Yorks?

OK on the basis that the only stupid questions are the ones you don't ask (never really understood that either :D )....is it a legal requirement to get this done?

No, not unless you hire the vehicle out.

On my Calis tailgate, there is a (German) sticker. It states that the gas system has been approved ab factory. Nad service intervals for the gas system is two years (in Germany).

why don't you all buy a can of leak detection ? just turn on your gas and spray it on all your fittings and connections. if it grows a load of bubbles theres a leak. how do you think the professionals do it?

I think the professionals maybe put a pressure meter on the system and see if it leaks , check/change the hose and regulator when out of date , check pipes and connections and give a certificate ....and charge money....
It's each thiere own if they want to check it (not reqiured in every country )
But imo a good thing to do allthough mine is not re-checked since new and turning 6y .

That is a German requirement, not U.K.
A good nose and as mentioned, Leak Detection Spray or soapy water and a brush is all you need. Regulators are designed to fail safe.
Also check function of Burner Fail Safe and flame colour.
Yellow/Orange flame and soot Not Good.

What colour does Cymraeg gas burn ?
Does it have a slight wiff of leek. :thumb

Hi. We've had our gas bottle turned off for a while but put it on at the weekend. After using the van we turned the Gas off under the cooker but left the Gas bottle on. Got into the Van yesterday and strong smell of Gas from the living area. We opened up the compartment where the Gas Bottle is and no real smell of Gas from there and so assuming we might have a leak somewhere else. Anyone know where we can get a Gas Test sorted for our Van. We're in the Canterbury Area in Kent. Or do we need to take back to a dealer for them to arrange? Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks

Is is under Warranty? If so Dealership.

If not, any Caravan or Motorhome Dealer should be able to arrange.

You can check out the gas safe website it will have a list of engineers that are lpg qualified in your area and should also list the type of work they are qualified to do. But be aware not all lpg qualified gas engineers can work on campers/caravans

any gas leaking at the bottle end should fall out the gas drop out hole (worth checking it's not blocked by something) . it's a pretty straightforward system from there . try a bottle of 'leak detection spray ' on all the fittings you can get at. you may find it's an easy fix.

There is a recall for a small number of V.I.N's....
Does this help?

Thanks, we're a 2016 Ocean but we'll asked the dealer. It's in at JCB Ashford tomorrow for an issue with the media centre, but guessing it would have to go to Eurovans Crawley for the Gas check as this the closest Cali dealer. Will find out tomorrow - thanks all for the speedy replies.

Hello, guess it is OK to follow up on this previous thread on the subject of gas servicing for an Ocean. We are looking to have a gas service on a 2016 model. Our VW dealer is not interested and the nearby Motor Home habitation specialists all say they cover the wrong sort of Gas. Conclusion seems to be that we need to pick an engineer with LPG qualifications from the Gas Safe Register. Anyone have any thoughts on the subject such as to whether they need Cali experience or an idea of how much would be reasonable to pay please?

A gas safety check for a house costs £50 in which they pressure test every thing, check the fire, the boiler and cooker.

So much much less for checking a bottle, a pipe and a burner I would say.
