Bit of a long shot this but currently live inGermany and my Cali is insured with Allianz. Does anyone out there use a different company or good experiences with a different company. Found it difficult to find anyone else to take he business.

Appreciate unlikely anyone can help, but worth a try.

Hi Cody,
I read your post from last year and wondered who you insured with eventually? We live in Italy and are trying to solve the insurance 'challenge', made harder in our case as we are exporting a new Cali from UK, then after reg'ing it it Italy, need to re-import it to UK after about 4 months - an insurance and DVLA/HMRC minefield!
Regards
Al

Hi there, stayed with Allianz in the end as there was a cheeky clause in there about penalties for early cancel. We're currently organising going back to UK and sorting the HMRC and DVLA joys which are proving interesting as to re- register you need proof of address in the form of a utility bill but only give you 3 days after arrival to register the car. I got the insurance through a broker called Culpeck who specialise in insuring overseas though usually HM Forces but they may be able to help. Let me know if you need details. I do have chums who have been stationed in Italyl who may have better local knowledge as I believe they have to insure vehicles on the local economy as it were. I can drop Helen a line to find out if you think it would be useful?

Hi all
I've insured our Cali for the last 3 years with Safeguard Motorhome insurance overwritten by Allianz. Fully comp. Valued at £35k . Stipulated must be gated off road parking or garaged overnight. (South East London address)
Prices/renewals as follows Nov 2009 = £443 ; Nov 2010 = £463 ; Nov 2011 = £468 ;
Nov 2012 = £484 .
It seems dearer than most I've seen on this forum but I've stuck with it because it also includes fullY comp. cover for ALL EUROPE, ALL YEAR WITH UNLIMITED MILEAGE
Also included is FULL AA BREAKDOWN COVER FOR THE UK AND ALL EUROPE AGAIN FOR ALL YEAR WITH UNLIMITED MILEAGE.
So all in all great peace of mind. Haven't had to use any of the cover up till now.
Cheers Eric

Thanks Alf and Eric, very useful information.

Alf, I really appreciate the offer, but no need to ask your ex-Italy friends, there are a few based here who have advice and experience of their own (no CALI owners though), so we are gathering a few options now, but as you say the whole export / import / registration thing is riddled with complications which would prove rather expensive to get wrong! Add to that the CALI being a specialist vehicle.....I'm sure we will get there.

I will try CULPEK, ALLIANCE and SAFEGUARD now, thanks again both.

Al

Any current recommendation for insuring a Cali in Germany. Premiums are eye-wateringly high here although compared to what I was paying for insurance in Texas not so bad. The broker Culpek seems to be a good option and are recommending Allianz. The fact they are happy to conduct business in English is a huge plus. Any other suggestions for brokers/insurers. I still have a few of months before my Cali arrives so plenty of time for window shopping.

I used Astrid at Culpeck who was great. Insured our 6.1 Beach tour through them and they used Mirascon, when I was living in Germany. Think it was about 800€/year. I find insurance in Europe generally more expensive but anyone over the age of 18 is insured on the policy which is certainly better value than the UK.

Will it have a German license plate ?
If yes, if you find an insurer that accept your No Claim certificate than it depends how many years of no claims you have.
When i moved to Germany, Ergo (part of Munich Re) accepted my no Claim certificate from Admiral in the UK.
In Germany you can register a Cali as a Car or as a Motorhome. If you have many years of no claim registering it and insuring it as a car might be cheaper despite the higher road tax. If you have not so many years of no claim (10 or less roughly), I find it cheaper to insure it as a Motorhome and pay the flat 220€ road tax. Check the ADAC insurance as well.

Yes, even though I will buy in Holland, first registration will be in Germany so it will have German plates. I'm also resident in Germany.
Thanks for the headsup of car vs motorhome classification which I wasn't aware of. I only have 4 years no-claims (possibly 3 depending how the German insurance calculate NC. My last insurance was in the USA and over there they don't have an official no-claims discount system). I just obtained an official document from Farmers in the US showing my claims history and the date the policy was terminated. The latter is impt because you can't duplicate the NCB on multiple policies.
