Last year I got this fitted in our 2008 California. It has massively improved our in car entertainment and sat nav options.
Sony XAV-AX1000 Media Receiver (6.2 Inch, with Bluetooth and Apple CarPlay) - Black https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07GLTVT62/?tag=eliteelect-21

We now have Apple Carplay, Amazon Music, Apple Music & Waze all voice activated with Siri. It really has improved our 12 year old van which we’ve had for 11 years. The fact that it has an actual volume button is great and it’s very easy to use.

It works really well and comes with all the attachments to perfectly fit in our 2008 T5. Even has a small frame to fit the double din hole and a microphone.

I fitted this model too.
Digging into the spec’s of the Sony headunits I seem to recall the range all had the same power and processors, with the only difference being the screen size and additional buttons on the front.

Pleased with the purchase, and complimented with a Brodit phone holder/charger.

NB - no android auto on this model though.

Interesting - a much more sensible price than a lot I've seen! Does it have the animations on screen when you change the aircon settings or engage the parking sensors?

I didn’t connect a reversing camera as happy with sensors. I don’t have steering wheel buttons so very basic standalone connection. I wasn’t going to connect the microphone as don’t call when driving but actually this is good for Siri. We also like that we can Bluetooth music from my wife’s iPhone while using my iPhone for Waze and CarPlay. That’s often not possible I think. It obviously also charges. Compared to what we had before it amazing. I do like CarPlay a lot.

Hi, just ordered this unit for my T5 Cali. Did you require any wiring harness adaptors or did it come with everything required to fit (plug & play).
Thanks
Al

I didn’t fit it. Got a stereo specialist to do it. I think it came with everything except a DAB aerial. Not sure though.

I particularly like Siri. My wife falls asleep on any long journey and so voice activation works great.

We used to have an iphone cable connection in the glove box to the old VW stereo. If you wanted to change the music you needed to disconnect the ipod/iphone, change the album and then reconnect it in the glove box. When your wife is asleep, doing this from the driving seat was horrendously dangerous.

Good to know - looking forward to modernising the van with car play. It currently has the VW sat nav unit but it struggles to tune into any of the radio stations and doesn’t have any means of connecting your phone!

I use Waze almost all the time but it can sometimes take you down quite narrow or steep streets that are possible but challenging.

This summer we are going over the Pyrenees. I’ve bought a map and won’t be blindly following Waze this time.

I see your van is similar vintage to ours. CarPlay is amazing IMO.
