Headrest inserts for seats

Hi Guys has anyone come across this problem before, my headrest height adjust ratchet mechanism insert thingy has broken and I've purchased new parts from vw, but how the hell do you get the old ones out without damaging the seat??

If you already have the new one, can't you see some kind of bar hook (is this correct?)? You might need a firm but small hook to unplug it, or if you are lucky, the thingy can get loose by wiggling and pulling firmly upwards.
