Good morning all.

I’m hoping someone might do me a quick favour and take a photo of the ID sticker on the above component, or just record and supply me the part number?

I committed a serious schoolboy error this morning - boiled the kettle and closed the hob lid having only turned the flame to minimum rather than off!

I smelt a rat (burning tea towel actually) before incinerating the whole van, and mercifully the damage was confined to the glass, which sagged a bit!

It then exploded rather impressively as it cooled down. Big clean up!

Whilst preparing this question I’m offered previous threads where people have asked about 3rd party suppliers - that’s what I’m driving at really, as it’s likely be half the dealer price (witness my experience with my OE shower retrofit).

Grateful therefore for any updated gen on suppliers of the genuine article at keener-than-VW prices.

Many thanks in advance!

John.

I'm afraid the liklihood of a 3rd party supplier is just about zero.
This company supplys genuine VW parts and tend to be cheaper.

OK, many thanks - I’ll have a look right away.

I just called my supplying dealer, and the damage at list price is £351.07 - I’d fully expected half that, but really nothing surprises me with VW.

Looks like I might even be researching toughened glass specialists and making my own!

I found this on wwwLLLParts.co.uk,
Took time to find but at least with the part numbers it is easier.

Many thanks everyone - a great response and very rapid cooperation as always!

When I get home I shall look into getting a replacement piece of glass cut and toughened, to fit back into my existing metalwork. I’ll do a “how-to” in that event.

If that is still cost-prohibitive then I’ll probably make a stainless replica which will have the advantage that you will be able to stand anything hot on the top side of it - within reason (still a sound idea to turn the gas off first mind).

If I do that I’ll make the pattern available to anyone who wants it, or perhaps make commissioned copies!

Update: looks like I can get a bespoke replacement toughened glass panel for ca. £100 - I can make the profile / pattern / drawing available for anyone interested, and unlucky (or stupid!) enough to break their own hinged hob cover . . .

PS the ‘LLLParts’ price (for an OEM part supplied to the VW number) was £262.61 vs £351.07 from VW !!!

In my case the glass didn't brake, but it came loose from the metal hinge. I took it to a dealer who first tried glueing the glass back to the hinge (it was done by a professional glass company). When I arrived to the dealer to have a repaired part fitted, it all looked properly done, but after it was fitted back to the gas hob unit, it wouldn't close - the glass company probably used too much glue (though it didn't seem like it was too much just looking at it). After that the dealer had enough of it and just ordered new replacement part.
What I'm trying to say is that it will probably be really hard job to finely position the glass between hinges on one side and closing catch (probably wrong expression, sorry) on the other.

Anyone tried replacing glass plate with alu or wooden one?

I certainly did consider making a new cover in stainless, or even aluminium, with a hard anodised surface treatment to make it more scratch / scuff-proof, but today I have found a glazier who can do me the toughened glass replacement with an identical frosted finish for ca. £50 all-in, so I have gone with that option to retain the best match to the original part - I will post pictures of the panel when I get it, and document the rebonding and refitting of the metalwork, and then the final assembly to the galley unit. Should be about 10 days or so until I have the new piece in my hands - watch this space . . . .

All finally finished now after various distractions and diversions on the way. The final result: “looks just like a bought one”!!! Very happy with it.

Give me a shout anyone who may end up in a similar predicament, and who wants help doing a glass replacement repair for an all-in cost well below a third of the price of the whole replacement lid assembly.
