There was once a wonderful lie the Telegraph told regarding Birmingham city council’s Winterval festival. This was a months long celebration, including Muslims Eed, Hindu’s Diwali, pagan’s solstice, atheist’s Santa Clause and Christian’s Christmas.

The lie was that it was political correctness gone mad, they call it Wokeism these days, that you couldn’t say Christmas anymore.

The truth is that communities all celebrate the shortest day in different ways and all of them are fun/interesting.

Twenty odd years later and the lie still lingers as you’ve just demonstrated. Crazy stuff.

My informant, a Black actor with the Royal Shakespeare Company, was really quite annoyed with the way the word has been hijacked.

He is also annoyed with the widespread use of the term “racism” which he asserted must be deliberate to deserve that label.

They would say there's also a form of pernicious racism, which is systemic prejudice embedded in ways that we think and behave. For example, a judge or magistrate who on seeing a black person come into the courtroom assumes they are the defendant rather than one of the advocates.

You could of course use the term "unconscious bias" for that, but when it has to do with race (rather than some other characteristic like disability), the term racism is often applied and I personally think that's a reasonable use of the term.

My actor acquaintance was not so kind as to characterise the type of incident you allude to as unconscious bias. He called it “ignorance”.
