Hi there,

Wondering if anyone can recommend who to go with for insurance of a T5 conversion, specifically for a 20yr old driver/owner. Also need to be on a policy which doesn't need the policy holder to have another car.

Any advice would be highly recommended.

Also I am presuming because it is a conversion as specialist insurance company or am I wrong in this thinking and would general van insurance be ok?

TIA x

adrian flux brentacre or A plan

I would be thinking of phoning a couple of camping conversion firms for leads

Van insurance is generally expensive, campervan less so.

Usual sources are Safeguard (Swinton), Comfort Insurance, Motorhome & Caravan Club, Admiral etc.

Do an internet search for 'campervan insurance' and you'll get more than you can handle.
Used to be pretty specialised but seems to be attracting more ins. companies now.

LV seem to be the best value for Cali insurance at the moment, best of luck.

T5 conversion not a Cali which might be very different. Professional conversion or Joe Bloggs in his back yard?

Has the V5 been changed to Body Type - Motor Caravan/ Campervan ?
If not then the specialist firms won’t be interested.

More than 1 named driver tends to lower premium as does limiting the annual milage.

Thanks all for the suggestions,

getting some pretty ridiculous quotes in the region of £1500-1700.

The insurance company are saying this is because of 2 reasons: 1. age, 2. because of having previously only having car insurance rather than van insurance.
They have said that whatever my age, the first year of insurance on a van would be very expensive. Wondering if first time cali/ van drivers have found this, then seen in go down dramatically the next year?

Any other tips would be greatly appreciated, because unfortunately the finalising of buying this is relying on this insurance going down. :( It would be the second Cali in the household, having followed in my mums footprints and the excitement was getting very big!

So at the moment it is just a Van that has been used a work vehicle, I am getting it converted by a friend who has done quite a few of the previously, he has lots of experience in converting them and big sprinter vans so I would have to speak to him.

Put your Mum on the Insurance and make sure the V5 has been changed.

I was trying to add my son (23yrs and 5 years experience without endorsements or accident)) to my policy (Aviva). They refused because of his age. He needs to be 25 years minimum.

I rang Comfort and they said the same.

Is the van updated on the v5 for motorcaravan? If so that will help bring the insurance down and mean you can do 70 on dual carriageways too.

No idea on under 25s though sorry, it may be very expensive. Specialist insurers are your best bet, I personally wouldnt touch Adrian Flux after bad experiences but they may be competitive.

Reality is that most Cali insurance would be nearing that if no claims discount and excesses were taken off.

First car that had cost twice as much to insure as to buy, decades ago.

Reviving an old thread - but not old enough to get me a revival medal ... ;)

OK anyone been able to get insurance on the Cali for a 22 year old? He is a good driver and I know that I can trust him with the van ... but struggling with the min 25 year age limit with Comfort. Just need a week's insurance ... and even apps like cuvva do not provide an option.
