Hi all.
My European specced Cali Ocean is coming…. Without an Alarm.
Anyone had issues insuring one without an alarm in the uk? I don’t hold much faith in alarms tbh but wanted one just to make insurance less complicated. I really don’t want to have an aftermarket (additional) key fob for an alarm and a technician splicing into the electrickery.

In short is it a big enough deal to not buy this van or am I overlooking something?
Thanks s2

Insurance companies always prefer that a vehicle as expensive as a California has an alarm but more importantly an immobiliser. I think that many would be reluctant to give full cover without it. Some even ask for a tracker which is not a bad idea anyway.

Theres only one proper answer - ask your insurer.
My guess is:
1. The lack of an alarm won't matter
2. The lack of an immobiliser may be a big issue
3. Being European spec may be an issue.

You may find that if you are talking to specialist motorhome insurers that they are not too fussy but may want a tracker fitted.
On the other hand a mainstream car type insurer may not want to give you cover.

Depending on your circumstances, ie perhaps needing Business use / commuting etc you may be reliant on only a short list of insurers that will give you cover on a standard uk van. Someone like NFU will cover just about anything with wheels but may well charge a large premium for doing so.

Very surprised to learn that it’s not supplied with an alarm/immobiliser @s2bear . I suspect your insurer won’t cover you unless an immobiliser and or tracker is fitted.

Funny enough on mainland Europe it seems they don’t include an alarm/ immobiliser as standard. I can’t remember a time when vehicles supplied in the UK didn’t have one.

Thanks all. I should have mentioned. It does come with an immobiliser as standard. Just not the alarm. I currently have a European spec BEACH with an immobiliser but not an alarm. NFU don’t require an alarm but they also don’t insure campervans (they see the beach as an MPV)

I was wondering how fussy the campervan insurance companies are about it as my only experience with them on the whole is that they wouldn’t insure a Beach back in 2017 full stop anyway. Many of the non campervan insurance CO’s were demanding trackers and Thatcham Cat 1 devices etc. I didn’t really want several extra bits of tech hanging off my key ring waiting to go wrong. Also didn’t want anyone pulling apart a new van to install motion sensors and splice wires into the canbus etc

Anyway, my choice is take the van with immobiliser and no alarm or wait ages for a another van. Darn it.
Guess I’ll have to call some insurance companies - I really LOVE that

You’re spot on. All NFU seem to be worried about is how many shotgun cartridges one is going to keep in the van overnight and even then, they don’t sweat unless it’s more than 260 DEFAQTO ️ though and very easy to deal with.
