Can anyone recommend an insurance company specialising in campers?

Caravan & Motorhome Club Insurance.

Not the cheapest but covers everything even when camping. Be aware some companies will provide cheaper insurance but basically only cover for motoring accidents etc. So a cooking fire - not covered. Awning out and damaged by storm - not covered. So check very carefully what the cover actually covers.

Safeguard and Comfort are two other big names in the sector.

A-Plan (a broker) also say they have a specialist line in campervans and I may see what they are like on ours next time as we're already with them on a couple of other vehicles.

Search this section of the forum and you'll find other names too.

Needing on street parking and use for work options, Direct Line came in cheaper than others.
Though others may be better if you don't need those.
They assured me that anything that is bolted into the van is covered.
I specifically checked this. It is insured as a Caravanette (alternative was Ocean, but it's an SE - so could be either I guess).

Most companies will insure the camping side of things if you have a road crash. But some won’t cover this side of things in a camping accident.
eg: you have a drive away awning that gets damaged in a storm and damages the vehicle or a cooking fire when camping. Just check the small print.

Just shopping around for insurance for my forthcoming Cali. Comfort is coming out cheapest and with unlimited mileage BUT are saying that I have to have a Cat5 or 6 Thatcham approved tracker due to the value of the vehicle. Is this what other members have found? If so what tracker did you fitted?

Don’t forget the 48 hr rule with Comfort.

I’m doing exactly the same. Had a quote from AIB for £409 with £5000 contents and ‘New for Old’ cover for 3years/15,000 miles through Aviva. My current insurers LV have quoted £258 But the cover is not so good. Both companies also said that a Tracker would have to be fitted. I’ve spoken to a friend in the ‘Tracker’ business and he said that what you need is a ‘Ghost’ but not sure if that has a tracker in it. How many miles are you intending to do??

What’s that WG?

Mileage is a big unknown (especially during these Covid times) but I want to ensure I don’t underestimate. Comfort quoted me £421 subject to having a tracker. CAMC quoted me a whopping £626 but didn’t mention a tracker. Whilst I have a decent NCD from driving cars, I don’t have a Campervan Insurance history (this being my first Cali) so maybe that’s working against me? Any first timers out there with any advice?

LV have taken into account my no claims but AIB said it doesn’t matter! Really confusedo_O:talktothehand

Give Justkampers a try

Just organised insurance today for our 6.1 Ocean arriving this Friday and it was a bit of a minefield but sorted now. Ended up with CAMC they were around £590. 10K miles, Cali in driveway nothing extra security wise and full cover inc unlimited in Europe. They were not interested in my NCD from my car history (not a camper) they said.
Spoke to my current insurer (Direct Line) first and went through the quote and they were around £300, then got into specifics of what was covered. They said it covers everything factory fit in the Cali including hob fridge etc etc. Excellent I thought. I then asked ok so I'm camping and switch on my gas hob to make a bacon sandwich and something goes wrong in the gas supply and sets fire to the Cali, that's covered right?. Silence then the person said I need to go and check with our claims team and get back to you. Called me back about 30 minutes later saying no that would not be covered. They would only cover the replacement of the hub etc if it was damaged in an accident with the vehicle.
Now I suspect that is wrong as lots of people don't have insurance through CAMC or Comfort etc but I'm don't fancy chancing it. Just my 10c

Thanks for that Rod. LV have so far come back with the cheapest quotation by far at £194 (or £220 with NCD protection). Fully Comprehensive based on 16000 miles p.a. with dashcam fitted. No requirement for a tracker mentioned. I will download the policy documents to read through and will call them to discuss what is and isn’t covered I.e. your bacon sandwich example. Thanks again.

Hi again Rob. Scanning the LV policy it says:

Section 2 Fire and theft What’s covered?
If your car and/or its accessories (even in your garage) are lost or damaged by fire, lightning, explosion, theft or attempted theft, we’ll either:
• pay for it to be repaired; or
• replace what’s lost or damaged; or
• pay the market value of your car if it’s a total loss (and when we’ve agreed this with you, your car will become our
property).

So, if a gas fault resulted in fire then it would appear to be covered?

Yeah I agree it does look like it. It might be worth asking the question to them directly.

Just looking at my existing Direct Line policy and it says ""cover up to the market value of the vehicle if it is stolen or damaged by fire or attempted theft." but when they were asked directly the bacon sandwich question they came back and said no that wouldn't be covered. What I don't know is did that info actually come from a discussion in their claims department or just the guy had lost interest and wanted to basically blew me off. I just never trust insurance companies lol.

This is what you have to be careful of. Campervans usually because of the drivers age, milage covered, etc etc are perceived as low risk hence low premiums. But unless it is a proper Campervan/Motorhome policy it is being insured as just a vehicle and not covered for “ Camping “ accidents nor the additional cover for the equipment carried eg: Driveaway Awning, Brandrup accessorise etc:
Reading the small print is important. Cheap is cheap for a reason.

Can’t argue with what you say WG. I suppose I just need to assess how much of a premium I want to pay to cover camping accessories/accidents. I’ve got a couple of weeks left to deliberate :)

GG Comfort offer new for old on a write off for 3 years as long as you got it new which I know you have, saves on 3 years worth of GAP insurance. Legal cover is inclusive as well, which I am currently using and maxing. And as WG says they cover the camping side.

Concerned about the tracker, I know I needed one for my GW but I have done 3 online quotes with Comfort for the Cali and entered the full value, declared no tracker fitted and still got a quote. Pretty sure someone else on here had the same issue RECENTLY but it was waived when speaking to someone at Comfort because they understood it was a VW Cali and not a Fiat or FFORD.??
