Started my search for a camper about a month ago, saw a second hand Cali ocean for the first time yesterday and WANT ONE the price holds so well I'm considering a new coast if i can afford it..plus there is so little second hand ones out there I'm feeling a little disheartened.. I've wanted a camper for years and will finally get funds for it October ish time.. Just when demand has rocketed
Quick question is this forum uk based ?

UK based.
I think there will be a significant number of California’s coming on the market soon.
There is always an increase of For Sale vehicles as winter approaches, but this year it could be even higher.

That's good to hear (from my part) thank you

It's started already. A load went on in the last week days. A massive step up compared to recent weeks.

Hi thanks for you post but I'm looking for an ocean or coast
Coast only came to the UK this year so I suspect it isn't surprising that they are few and far between on the second hand market. Fingers crossed a few may appear as the season subsides but I would imagine they will command nearly new pricing. I started collecting prices on a spreadsheet and Oceans depreciate at about £3k - £5k a year. I have seen peeps asking as much for a 2019 Ocean as I have just paid for my my recent order.

Interesting research @Wogga. What would you reckon my van would list at now? It’s a March 2016 204 DSG 4Motion with 36k on the clock.

Middle column is mileage. this is what they were asking whether they get it or not?

Thanks. It’s always interesting to get a rough idea of value for insurance. With the cost of new vans now I would be mad to trade up though.

Yes I'm looking at the possibility of getting a new coast but my budget is 50k max so from what i've seen i may be pushing it even with the 10% discount, I need to have a good think about spec and whether I'd be better getting a used ocean or not. If I get a used Ocean I want 2018 around 20k mileage, do you think that's achievable for 50k max ? Seen a few at 52/53k but just can't stretch to that ...

There will be a glut of 2nd hand vehicles in the next few months.

Here are the prices I found over the last month, forget the top joker, averages about £48k. Just stick to your budget, a new Coast should be achievable with £50k put the press on the dealer.

Thanks for this, really useful, I take it they are the asking prices ? What do you think drives the 13k difference? The specs are high anyway, power/engine size, 4WD ?

Ebay is as strong as autotrader these days, despite the dodgy reputation. Remember if it looks too good to be true, it's probably a scam.

Yes the price is driven by spec 4 motion, two tone but also a VW dealer will be asking high prices, hopefully to offer some discount. Prices are asking from here and Autotrader.

Try ‘drive the deal’
Yes...Drive the Deal are offering 10%.....leverage that discount with a dealer you like...I did mine all by email in the end and gave the dealer if you can match this I will sign....

Winter Sales and discounts best time to buy, especially for MoHos dealers need to clear the lots for 21 models.
Do you think MoHo dealers will be clearing stock between now and Dec, or in the run up to March?

Know it’s not an exact science, just wondering if and when to hold out to…

Thanks!

I would have thought prices would start going up and/or discounts falling post New Year, but we are in strange times and if a vaccine comes along or there is a very significant recession it could be a buyers market for some time.

Now until Dec is always the best time, pity the NEC show is not on. Peeps on the verge of buying this years stock chance their minds because they are woo’d by the dealers with next years models and show offers Prompting offers on the “old” stock. Post New Year is the start of the peak as peeps look to get one for the Easter to Summer period.

where ever you go the dealers put the “we are not under pressure posture vans are flying out the door”. Mind you saying that I have had more emails this year from dealers looking fo stock I.e are you selling?

as for Cali’s our local VW dealer has one in for demo but absolutely not up foe sale yet.

Just been notified of a 2020 Cali with 500mls up for sale on Autotrader, a good 3k over list price, 7 - 10k over what other peeps have selling the equivalent for.

With regard to depreciation, I have a 2015 140 SE.. bought it New for £42k just over 5 years ago.. So with the anticipated depreciation of between £3 - £5k per year my van is now worth between £16k and £26k? I wish I could find a California for that price...Most I have seen with 22k miles and that year have been between £38 and £40k which would make it one of the least depreciating vehicles on the planet..since we bought ours prices have rocketed out of the reach of most people so the next best thing is low mileage used which are quite rare and that’s why prices are so high.

Judging by similar vans currently listed in the for sale section on this site, in 5 years you've lost around £2k or £3k on your vehicle.

Not bad......not bad at all...:thumb

Yes it is all relative, depreciation of 3-5k is based on a current pricing for as like. If there is a New Year increase in the event of a no deal it wouldn’t be unreasonable to see 2020 vans going secondhand for more than was paid. If you are considering selling your van the best outcome is a no deal.

be interesting to see what manufacturers do to the UK market, produce a stripped out Cali to keep the pricing reasonabl? Is that why the Coast has been introduced to prempt a no deal?

And can imagine how secondhand prices will go if there is a 10% extra duty goes on to new imports... it’s the customer that will pay in the end...
