Hi!

Has anyone redesigned Webasto Thermo Top C for full parking heater?. I know that it is possible, I wonder how it works? I have booked a new California Beach at a good price but there is no parking heater, 230V socket and Alcantara. besides, has all I need.
I am worried about the lack of a 230V socket and I wonder if it is often useful?

I use the parking heater all the time for winter camping and power sock all the time when hooked up to the grid.

Aftermarket Electrical Hookup is easily fitted. Buying and fitting VW parts more expensive but many alternatives.
Using the Webasto Heater to heat vehicle possible but only for short periods as a heavy drain on battery and normally only run with engine running because of this. Eberspacher Parking Heater also easily fitted post purchase using original VW parts, very expensive, or using a 3rd Party Kit. Well worth it as can be used for long periods of time, overnight etc: and transforms the use of the vehicle for all year round use.

I think the thread starter means the engine heater Webasto Thermo Top C . This unit is designed to heat fluid/Coolant rather than Air,(It could allow you to use the cab heating to a certain degree for short period - and maybe the REST button for a while after) However you really need the Webasto Air Top 2000 STC or equivalent Eberspacher to work (with a timer) to push hot air into the cabin.when you need it. about £1200-£1500 for a Retro Fit.

Mines being done on Thursday.

In winter, we do not plan to sleep in the car. In Poland, winters are a bit different than in yours;) In winter, a hut in the woods and a fireplace. We will sleep in the car during spring and summer trips. I read that Webasto Thermo Top C can be converted so that it works non-stop, that is, until the second battery is discharged.

In Poland, we have sales of cars from 2017 production and there is a 21% discount on them. The minus is that there are only a few cars to choose from. I have a reservation for a car with a 204, DSG and 4Motion engine but without a parking heater and a 230V socket. The price is very good.
I thought about expanding Thermo Top C and adding a 230V socket or other power connection without puncturing the car.

You can add a remote kit to the thermo top C for a few hundred euros but it will be limited to 30minutes (as it runs from the engine battery).

A proper parking heater is worth adding and there are lots of people to do this but it will probably be £1200+ fitted more if you want the OEM vents.

Mine is being fitted next week +

Supply & fit Webasto Airtop 2000 STC diesel heater £1,045 + vat

Webasto 7 day digital timer £120 + vat (Fitted)

OEM Factory Heater ducts £180 + vat (Fitted)

I would consider the room temp sensor if you have the controller with the thermostatic settings, as the intake is in the footwell it will think it is colder than it is.

I often have to set mine to 13 or 14c to hit 20c, if I set to 20 i melt.

Its not necessary once you get used to it but its a bit confusing when you set to 20 and end up with 28c the first few times.

^ Does the Webasto 7 day digital timer not have a temp sensor as that where you set the temp? (It looks like it does bottom right corner). This will be located above Bed Level.

The temp sensor is in the air intake which is in the front footwell. This area tends to be cooler than the rest of the van.

The controller apparently has a sensor but webasto don’t use it, bizarre I know.

Gazellio,
can you do a photoshoot when you get your back please.
It's on my agenda too.
I'm in Bedfordshire, are you going local?
Cheers

I will post the completed project and details of the company but it's not local I am travelling up norf :)

PS: There are local companies but I wanted a complete factory look with the excellent controller by the bed - and an experienced VW California specialist.

After reading this I’m pondering if it can be enabled by a technician.

Looks like it has internal temp sensor but also can have an external sensor:

Temperature sensor fault Temperature sensor of the MultiControl/SmartControl defective. Contact Technical Support/Customer Service.
Te6 W bus temperature sensor fault Temperature from the external sensor (W bus) cannot be read correctly. Check installation. Replace the sensor, if necessary.
T5d UniBox temperature sensor fault Temperature from the external sensor

Yes but if you look at the order of the sensor scanning, it will always use the intake sensor before the controller sensor and as its automatic you cant select it. Seems very odd design.

I believe from talking to Jonny that if you add the external sensor it works.

Ok confused there must be a purpose to the Controller sensor?

What if only the controller is used and no separate Intake sensor or separate room sensor.

I would ask your technician about it, if he can enable the controller sensor in software, its not available in the menu for a user. Maybe with a diagnostic connection you can enable the controller sensor but on mine it doesnt use it and I cant enable it.

You have the Webasto Air Top 2000 STC and the Webasto 7 day digital timer (as pictured) ?

I have no errors showing on the control panel.

Yes my fitter confirmed what you say. How odd not a lot of thought gone into that!

Thanks for all your help :thanks

Factory Heater, I use it every weekend at cycle race meetings. Fantastic bit of kit, makes the campervan concept more practical....
