Removing number plate lights on a California 2017 Ocean - Non-Screw Type

Hi, I have one LED number plate light that is not lighting. I'm not convinced it's the light (since it is LED) but I bought two OEM VW replacement lights (Part 5NA 943 021) in any case before testing the electrics. They do not have screws but only a metal clip at the back to hold them in place. I really don't want to be using a flathead screw driver to pry the lights out of their receptacle for fear of scratching the paint. Does anyone have a good way of removing the LED light fixture without scratching the surrounding paint?
