11,000 Southerners were travelling Sunday, mostly into the teeth of the Easterly .... Brighton half marathon and the weather did not stop a record start.

Although

There was a notable absentee ...

Apparently a heel problem flared up again .....:rolleyes:

What is it with this country, being sent home with a few centimetres of snow, I would of thought everyone at the shop would have winter tyres?

its an expense for the only week where the temperature dips low all day

To be fair winter tyres are recommended for below 8 degrees, can't remember the last time the mercury was above 8. :(

My last 40 years have been spent in the South West and South Coast, apart from a few years in the good ol' US of A.

Was born on Wearside but dredged up in London from an early age, but in mitigation I did spend most of my summers in Roker, and from 18 onwards Langdale was my adopted home for a few years. I suppose on average Somewhere on the Watford gap line would be accurate :D

I wrongly assumed as I remember you mentioning relatives in Lancs/Manchester area. :thumb

Well, I don't think there is a part of England more Arctic than the North East.

My "Mum" lives in Saddleworth, although she is not my biological Mum. She is Grandma to my two children and although my Biological Mum passed away 10 years ago and I could not have loved a Mum more the lady in Saddleworth whom I now call Mum is that close to my heart.

I also of course lived in Oldham, Preston and Lancaster, and where I lived in Virginia, up in the blue Ridge, the snow sometimes nearly buried the house :shocked

It was 15c last week here :)
:shocked:shocked:shocked
In the last 4 months, we have had a high of 14 and an average max temp of 8 degrees. Also 1.6m of rainfall. I need to move. :talktothehand

As this thread is de-railed already,
I want to share that back in the 80's I drove 30 odd miles in the snow ranging from a dusting to over 12" with 2 to 3 foot drifts at the sides of the road in a MK 1 Escort. That was about as harsh a condition as I remember down here and on the 5 or 6 occasions since I have always managed to get from A to B in what ever vehicle I owned. That was until I bought a 3 series BMW in 2011 and the bloody thing wouldn't go up a hill. Very embarrassing when a fiesta went up it relatively easily. Thats when I bought a 4x4 Range Rover Evoque but after 4 years of ownership (2 evoques in a row) no bloody snow!!!!!!!! Smartest move I ever made?? clearly not but it was a nice car and having moved on I'm hoping the Cali is a much smarter move.

Agree about the NE. My Mum was brought up in Roker and we used to go up there every Easter to visit my grand parents. The house had no heating except a coal fire in the sitting room and I can still remember the cold and ice on the inside of the windows. Brrrr.

Virginia is a great place for mountain music Jen, I hope you enjoyed it when you were there.

We used to have a regular university band, and where I was I was pretty much on the West Virginia border so had a lot of shindigs.

I sat between two camps: I was mostly working out of the Virginia Military Institute but was kindly given a Study and library facilities by the Lee Washington University next door. Every morning I would go into the VMI and give Little Sorrel a pat on the bum.

He was Stonewall Jackson's horse and carried him when he was wounded, for the last time, now stuffed and adorns the lovely hallway of the VMI.

Just outside Bristol Tennessee is Maces Springs, where the Carter Family live. On Saturday nights they have a ho down in a big barn there, we heard Jeanette Carter sing (this was 2003) and got invited to the Mount Vernon church on the hill, which APCarter helped to build, for the Sunday morning service. Lot of emotion then, June Carter had just died followed by Johnny Cash. Later we went to the Sun Studio in Memphis and Dyess Arkansas to see the shack JC was brought up. It was great, I could go on.........

My daughter told her husband he was nuts when he bought some snow chains for his Defender - that was before we had the most snow we've had for years!!

As a truck driver for many years I had to carry snow chains. Along with many colleagues I always opted for the easier solution: draw the curtains and put the night heater on!
