An alternative to the NC500 in Scotland is the South West 300 around Dumfries and Galloway. I've not done it but its an area I know well as I grew up in the region. I've just discovered that BBC Scotland's 'Landward' have been driving it recently, albeit in an electric car:

I'm sure it'll be popular and I reckon a Cali is a perfect vehicle for it - there are some great hidden corners in that area. There's a bit of info here and a few blogs if you Google it:

Galloway is beautiful, and for those C&MC new england bay is a beautiful camp site.

The whole journey to Galloway, from Gretna, is lovely. Even hugely historic in a very modern era with the munitions works just outside gretna and now a brilliant little museum. I loved my trip along that coast. A great recommendation to make.

Lovely area that some people seem to miss.
Travelled all around there in June, glorious weather, no sign of midges and the locals were very friendly.
The gardens at Logan are a must see, just a short drive/cycle ride from the New England Bay camp site.
